Pac-12's top ten sack men - fullmetal - 06-03-2013

Quote:Five of six pass rushers who recorded at least 10 sacks will be back.
  • Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State: 13 sacks/1.08 per game
  • Morgan Breslin, DE/OLB, USC: 13/1.0
  • Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA: 13.5/0.96
  • Carl Brandford, OLB, Arizona State: 11.5/0.88
  • Trent Murphy, OLB, Stanford: 10/0.7

The article goes on to list possible players who will join the double-digit sack club.  Oddly enough, only eight schools have such candidates, and some have multiple candidates.  Stanford is not one of them.  Here's to incorrect prognostication.

Re: Pac-12's top ten sack men - Roberton3 - 06-03-2013

That seems like a reasonable prediction to me.  Last year, Stanford as a team led the nation in sacks, but only had one player with 10 sacks (indeed, only one with 8 or more).  That's the result of a defensive scheme that spreads out the sacks, plus depth in the front seven.  So even if the total number of sacks goes up this year (which I expect it will), it's still relatively unlikely that two players will make it into double digits.

To build on Roberton3's point, Stanford's depth is greater than most teams in the BCS.  Murphy is the "alpha dog" of the group, but even he will get subbed in for a lot, especially if Stanford has sizable leads in games.

Stanford's front seven depth all will get in on the "party in the backfield" and so too will a few DBs.  What might be a fun exercise is the O/U on how many Stanford players register sacks in 2013?

If you consider these guys among the more likely suspects:  Gardner, H. Anderson, Parry, Mauro, Shittu, Watkins, Nwafor, Murphy, Lueders, Skov, Tarpley, Vaughters, K. Anderson, Lancaster, Martinez, Amanam, Richards, Carter, Lyons, Davis.

That's 20 guys.  If the O/U on Stanford defenders with at least one sack is 12, do you take the Over or the Under? I think I'd take the over.

I'm hoping we can really up our "coverage sacks" with the strength of the backfield. If Lyons can start showing all of that potential he had, our starting corners and safeties are up there with the best in the country. It should give the front 7 an extra half second to get to the QB. It should be a fun year for the defense.

It looks like the list of possible new members of the 10-sack club is of the schools that did not have a member last year. Otherwise I'm sure they would've listed Ben Gardner at the very least (I doubt he gets 10, but he did have 7.5 last year).

I'm *still* hoping to see multiple Stanford defenders over the 10 sack line...with a defense that spreads the pressure.  #nomercy  #ragerinthebackfield

Stanford set a school record for sacks last year, with 57. As others have noted, the sacks were spread out -- 15 players recorded sacks, 12 of whom return. There were 5 players with 5 or more sacks, 4 of whom return (Murphy, Gardner, Henry Anderson, Mauro). I think each of them has a chance to get 10 sacks. In addition, whoever wins Chase Thomas' position could put up good sack numbers (Vaughters or Lueders). And keep an eye on Kevin Anderson. He may find it hard to get on the field enough to put up big numbers this year, but after Murphy is gone, Kevin Anderson could emerge as a sack specialist.
