garvin's debut on the Denver Post is memorable - Redrum - 06-06-2013
Apparently his disdain for Univ. of Colorado sports got him noticed...and hired.Â

Garvin changed his name to Hubbard? I guess I failed to get the joke here?

That makes two of us.

An observation that someone local to Denver has as strong of an opinion about Colorado's place in college football as garvin does...interesting. Anyone thing CU-Boulder's prestige would drop if they didn't field a football team?

Do they still pay journalists? How quaint. I thought all written news media outlets had adopted the "write articles for the glory of being posted on the Huffington Post, you'll see the personal financial benefit later" model of generating content.

The author doesn't understand a key point -- no football program is so deeply buried that it can't be resurrected. Stanford is an obvious example, but there are plenty of others.

In Colorado's case, Terry, do you think they have the coach to do it?

In Stanford's case, did everyone here think Harbaugh was obviously going to change the program?
I think Coach Mac has a fine record of turning programs around as evidenced by his time at SJSU. He did a lot to strengthen their recruiting which he's bringing to Colorado (lots of free weekend football coaching workshops, etc.) I actually think Ca.l would have done better to poach him than grab Dykes, but I can understand why the Ca.l faithful wanted to avoid touching anything so lowly as a Ca.l State University employee.

I think McIntyre did a terrific job at San Jose State with few resources. I also think he's a good guy. I think he was a good hire for Colorado. I don't know enough about the situation at Colorado to make predictions, though.

I believe so, though I can't quite remember what the specific law is.

We'll make an exception for you if you want :)Â The fate of the Golden Be.ars has always been in their own paws, and thus far, it's been amusing to watch that play out.

Yeah, right. Good luck with that.

But not dead...
As Tedford demonstrated during his early years, my Alma Mater can produce a solid, winning program. It will never be a football factory but that is not something that we aspire to. We simply want a program that mirrors the success of other academically-oriented programs.
The sad fact is that Tedford lost his way, seduced by a film flam assistant coach. He acknowledged his mistake (his biggest regret) privately to well-placed alums, namely, that when he stopped recruiting "smart players", the program began a death spiral from which it is now just recovering. Yep. Berkeley will be back just as we knew Stanford would be back after the horrific Harris/Teevans years.Â
It simply requires a good coach who understands how to succeed in a setting like Berkeley (or PaloAlto). Harbaugh and "early-Tedford" proved it can be done.Â
A sobering reminder to all Stanford followers. Even during the run of Big Game wins that Berkeley piled up from 2002-2006, we all knew that string would be broken and that Stanford would recover. Today, I also know that Berkeley will recover and snap their current losing string v. the Cardinal. This year? Nope. Next year? Very possibly......
After all, the cycle of sports is what keeps us coming back.........

There's absolutely no reason to believe that Cal won't be back to at least competive levels. I don't see it being an Oregon, but they're not even close to the moribund state of Colorado or pre-Mac San Jose State.
I do disagree with you on one major point, however. There were many fans on the other side who envisioned kal as a perennial contender, holding the Axe for years on end with Stanford fielding a winning team once a decade that might be able to challenge. It was slippery slope thinking, but it was definitely common, at least on the Insider fan board.

There's a basic reason Kal has the longest Rose Bowl drought of any Pac/B1G school. It's a great school, but not great enough. It's the only school that's even in Stanford's league in terms of breadth and depth. However, it's still not as good. Unless we have a bad coach, we will always out recruit them for the best student-footballers. The mediocre/bad student footballers will chose UCLA or U$C. And when Kal sinks their academic standards they have the graduation problem. Getting squeezed in the middle between Stanford and the SoCal schools makes it very difficult for Kal to sustain long term success on Riegels Field.
There are times when they have relative success to us, but it's not sustainable over the long term especially now that Harbaugh/Shaw have proven Stanford can compete at the highest level.

Actually, in the last 10 years, the better student athletes have been going to UCLA, if published scores are to be believed.

Yvonne,
Only a fool thinks the "good times" will last "years on end" and, God knows, there are many fools who populate that site. That is why many of the old timers no longer post there.Â
Re: UCLA and better student athletes. You are correct if you narrow your focus to the last 5-7 years. Prior to that (the early Tedford years), Berkeley was signing better student athletes than UCLA. In one year (I believe, 06), Berkeley hit the 100% mark re: APR. As I mentioned earlier, moving away from that philosophy was ruinous.
