Another Endowed Position - FarmBoy - 06-07-2013

Congrats to Shannon Turley on becoming the first "Kissick Family Director of Football Sports Performance"

People interested in getting in on the football endowed positions game better hurry up. All that's going to be left soon will be "Director of Equipment Management" and "Chief of Field Operations and Lawn Mowing."

In seriousness, hopefully this further strengthens our hold on Turley who seems to be a pretty important cog in the whole turn around narrative of the past 7 years.

Quote:“This commitment and support for our player development means a great deal for me and the roots I have planted here with Brittany,” said Turley. “I'm excited to continue working relentlessly toward the goal of a Stanford Football dynasty, here in my terminal job.”

Does that mean...

Terminal doesn't have the greatest connotations either. Hopefully his health is okay...

Good move by Stanford. Thank you to the Kissicks, and congrats to Shannon Turley.

I think that the football program has more endowed positions than most departments. At this rate they'll start endowing player positions soon.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more in the way of making fun of this in the media. I remember when the OC became "Andrew Luck Director of Offense" and there was some chuckling at the silliness of it. I didn't see that with DC. I wonder if endowing the strength coach will produce some more. (I don't think it's particularly silly, but I get why people would want to poke fun at it.)

They already do that, in effect. Most (all?) of the football scholarships are endowed, aren't they?

Yeah I was just trying to make a joke, as in we'd have "The Donator McFancyPants outside linebacker".

OK, I'll say it. Our football team is well-endowed.

All joking aside, this move shines a big, bright light on just how important Turley has been to Stanford football's ascension. He's really the only constant in the program since 2006, and his efforts have yielded undeniable results.

From my perspective, he's been able to make maximize the collective ability on the roster in ways other programs haven't been able to do. While his peers are mostly focused on simply overseeing a lifting program and summer workouts, it seems Turley's hands extend into more areas than the average college football S&C coach, and that his approach in all areas is somewhat unique.  The results clearly speak for themselves.

Stanford's gains in player development, injury prevention and rehab under Turley would seem to make him quite a strong selling point to recruits.  That said, I've never heard or seen a recruit talk about Turley or the Stanford football S&C program as one of the reasons he is high on or picked Stanford.  Anyone ever hear of Turley being a key factor in a Stanford recruit's decision to choose Stanford, particular a highly sought after one?
