LSJU Mt. Rushmore - 71Bear - 07-20-2013

This morning, the Chron had a listing of the guys who should be on the Mt . Rushmore of each of the Bay Area's six pro teams, Stanford and my Alma Mater.

LSJU's four were Pop Warner, John Elway, Jim Plunkett and Andrew Luck.  May I suggest Ernie Nevers instead of Andrew Luck?  Otherwise, a great list.....

Thoughts?

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - FarmBoy - 07-20-2013

Is it football only? I would consider Bob Mathais for his overall accomplishments. I would probably replace John Elway with Mathais but kept Luck. Elway may be the superior athlete, but Andrew Luck but Stanford football back on the map in a way that Elway didn't.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - Hey - 07-20-2013

My completely subjective take on it is that Luck's defensive coordinator didn't have a "prevent defense" in their playbook.

Luck vs. Elway, you really can't go wrong with either decision.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - 82 Card - 07-20-2013

I don't know if I can narrow it down to 4. There are some players from way back that should be considered:

Ernie Nevers is one of two players who's jersey has been retired (along with Plunkett).  In 1925 Rose Bowl, he played all 60 minutes and ran for more yards than the Four Horsrmen combined.

In 1940, Frankie Albert made a major contribution to an undefeated season and a no. 2 national ranking.

I would also consider Bill Walsh.  Although his record on the field is not spectacular (at Stanford), he played an important role in making the current program possible.  At a time when Stanford's image (and football coaching all over) was lillie white, he promoted development of minority coaches. I don't think Jim Habaugh would have been so eager to come save Stanford football without Walsh.

Out of the original 4 on the list, I would drop Elway.  I loved watching him play. But I don't think he left his mark on the program the way the other people mentioned have.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - 71Bear - 07-20-2013

That is the beauty of this discussion - trying to narrow decades of performance down to four guys.  Whether it is the Giants, 49ers, Stanford or UC, it is not an easy task because there have been so many terrific players, coaches/managers and, in the case of the Niners, an owner (the great Eddie D.)....

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - Bruce Wang - 07-20-2013

Does Kal even have 3 people worth putting up there besides Aaron Rodgers?  The only other Kal players I can name off the top of my head are Marshawn Lynch, Tony Gonzalez, and Delta O'Neal (and that's only because he scored 4? touchdowns against us in Big Game).

Perhaps a Kal Burghers of Calais featuring Tedford and Roy Riegels would be more appropriate.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - yvonne - 07-20-2013

Steve Bartkowski comes to mind. Maybe Leigh Steinberg. He wasn't a player or coach, but had a big impact on sports.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - Leftcoast - 07-20-2013

Perhaps Chuck Muncie?

Here's a link to the article.

They chose Muncie, Kapp, Smith and Rogers for C.a.l.    Extra points for anyone who knows anything about Andy Smith.

Never heard of them.  ::) Oh you mean RoDgers, with a D.  Yeah the guy who won the Superbowl and made himself look like a thin-skinned d-bag on 60 Minutes?  Him, I know.

Seriously, if it wasn't for Aaron Rodgers, the average avid football fan would know nothing about Kal other than the Play.  I bet 90% of the Chiefs' and Falcons' fanbase think Gonzalez went to UCLA.

Re: LSJU Mt. Rushmore - 71Bear - 07-20-2013

My choices for UC would have been Smith, Vic Bottari, Muncie and Kapp.  Like Elway, Rodgers had more impact as a pro than a collegian.

Smith was a contemporary of Knute Rockne and a fabulous coach.  He was the architect of the Wonder teams.  Sadly, he died of influenza at the peak of his career.

One interesting story about Andy Smith...  When Rockne was looking for a West Coast opponent with whom to establish an ongoing series, he contacted Smith and a deal was struck.  Unfortunately, soon thereafter Smith passed way and Rockne changed from playing UC annually to establishing a series with Southern California.  Thus was born the greatest intersectional series in college football ND and SC.

71Bear, you guys got anybody that didn't play football in a leather helmet?  ;)

Really? I'd always heard the old wives' tale that Rockne's wife decided she really wanted to vacation in LA every year.

I like Warner, Nevers, and Plunkett. I'm torn between Elway and Luck for the last spot. I don't want to pick Luck just because his time at Stanford is fresher in my mind. But I suspect that he will stand the test of time. So, Elway was great, but I might go with Luck.

Nevers, Nelson, Plunkett and Luck.

Pub:  Sure.  Redshirt seniors who graduated in 2007 never lost to Stanford after being on the roster for the 2002-06 Big Games.  ;)

All Hank Luisetti did was change basketball from a floor game to an air game by popularizing the one-handed jump shot.

Warner, Luisetti, Mathias & Luck.

Good answer to the wrong question.
