Open practice - TRD - 08-07-2013

Hi,

I was just wondering whether the football team has any open practices for fans during training camp. I will be on campus next week (or at least back in the immediate area) and was curious if they had any open practices next week?

Thanks in advance.

Open practices? What are those? - Redrum - 08-07-2013

It is not at all clear when or if there will be open practices.  The trend in the last few years is to more closed practices, with the practice field surrounded by screened fences and security people shooing away those who might be "spying."

During Spring practice some open practices were announced shortly in advance.  Don't know whether the policy was absolute privacy during the regular season last Fall.

It used to be one of the great free entertainments clear across America.  Sit on the sideline bleachers and watch drills, watch your favorite players and see how football is actually taught at high levels of the game.  Now, closed practices seem to be more and more prevalent.

Ok thanks. Football is now serious bidness.

I noticed UCB has started practicing already. Are we not started because we have a bye the first week of the season? I assume we get the same total number of practices in the season as teams that open Aug 31, but it seems odd that when we line up against SJSU on Sept 7, we will have had fewer days of practice and not the benefit of an opening game under our belt. Or are we making up the practices by conducting more two-a-day practices or 6-7 days a week practices?

I am not sure about open practice dates, but I do know they have an open house on August 24.

"Stanford's fall practice schedule is set, and though the program is protecting some dates and times to keep prying eyes away, The Bootleg can make two days public: * August 12 will mark the start of fall practice. * August 24 will mark the open house, an annual family-friendly meet-and-greet event in which players sign autographs, take pictures, and chat with fans. Stanford's season does not start until September 7 because of a Week 1 bye, so its practice schedule has been shifted accordingly. Stay tuned to The Bootleg as we report on all things Stanford football from the opening whistle to the final snap of the 2013 season."

I appreciate the desire for focus and secrecy, but I remember being back on campus during the spring following my graduation, just as Bill Walsh was starting the first spring session of his second tenure. Not only did a friend and I attend a practice, but we actually walked on the field to get up close looks at some of the different drills. At one point we walked right past Walsh as our paths crossed. A different time, obviously, but something I'll never forget.

The reason, I'm pretty sure, it's secrecy from opposing coaches, though I'm sure that's a bonus. It's to prevent getting second-guessed by all the amateur footballologists out there. Whenever powerful people want to make something secret, this is often the real reason.

Back in the day it was also easier to know if a visitor might be using a camera at an open practice.  Today, just about everyone has a video camera on a smartphone.
