Dr. Dan Garza has passed away -
GoodGrief - 10-16-2013
I noticed this from David Lombardi's twitter feed (that Extra Point referenced on Jordan Williamson's injury). Dr. Dan Garza was the 49'ers Team Physician and also worked with the Stanford football team. He developed mouthguards with accelerometers in them to measure the impact of big hits. Chris Owusu's mouthguard registered something really high during one of his concussion-inducing hits.
Dan was also a great guy. He was in my dorm when I was a freshman and always had a big grin on his face. Even as a sophomore, Dan was on the cutting edge and was experimenting with the early technology of Motion Capture. We snuck into the Stanford gymnastics gym, and he filmed me doing gymnastics with white marks on my body so he could later digitize the motions. Dan was also a goalie on the lacrosse team and would frequently suffer a dislocated shoulder. When Dan was an RA, he designated a meek freshman to be his Dislocated Shoulder Pop-Back-In-er. So Dan would sometimes come home from practice with his shoulder hanging loosely from its socket and call the freshman to his room, whereupon the freshman would reluctantly trudge down the hall and close Dan's door. Then a bloodcurdling scream would emanate from Dan's room, and then the freshman would walk out of Dan's room looking profoundly disturbed.

Wow, GG I had not put 2 and 2 together, I played LAX with Dan my freshman year (I think he was a senior or junior at the time). You are right, he was a very friendly guy and really went out of his way to help coach a kid from the PNW up to play long stick like he expected. Sad to hear this.

Sadly, it appears that he had some serious issues. He was the subject of a criminal investigation and apparently committed suicide.Â

Unfortunate addition to this story.

"Unfortunate" is one hell of an understatement. This is shocking and terrible.

Why did it take a KRON 4 investigation four months after the suicide to get these details? This is really unfortunate, but publicizing it may have allowed other potential abuse survivors to come forward.Â
Why did it take so long? Good question - Redrum - 02-21-2014
Probably because "news" staffs are constantly being pared back and for some reason monitoring celebrity tweets or repackaging news available on the internet is considered more worthwhile use of staffers' time. I'm serious. Not that KRON is alone in this trend, but TV news operations are the least "investigatory" of all the news mediums. If it can't be put on video and back in time to edit for air at 5 p.m., they hardly recognize it exists.Â
The legal details which put all the load bearing support under the story might have taken a long time to emerge. He was under investigation, but apparently not formally charged, so it would take a leak or someone who watched the San Mateo Sheriff's office like a hawk to get onto the story. As an alternative, you can see how rumors would have to filter out, it would have to make its way to someone in a news operation and then they'd have to sell it to their bosses as worth the time for something that might not air for weeks or be worthwhile at all.
There's lots not to like about today's commercial media outlets, but being "slow" on this story is hardly at the top. It's not clear what damage was done by the time lag, given that the legal case was the driver for the whole thing. It's out, he's gone... and enough of the story is known to keep history mostly straight.

This wasn't meant to be a criticism of the media for taking so long to break the story. Is there a reason the sheriff's office did not come forth with details? is it because it would have somehow hindered the investigation? What is the ethical role of the university in this case?

I just hate that someone some of us knew well did this. I wanted to remember him positively as the guy that coached me up on the lacrosse team. While those memories will stick, this revelation just....I do not know that I have the words.

Yep. My memories now have a pallor over them. I no longer know which of Dan's actions were motivated by him being a caring person vs him being a sexual predator. Even writing that phrase is painful for me. When I decided that I wanted to get drunk for the first time, Dan bought a bottle of Absolut for the occasion and taught me my first drinking game. Afterwards, he walked me back to my dorm room. Nothing happened, and I felt entirely safe and taken care of like I was with a big brother. But that memory and others are tainted now.
More details are in the original kron report here

I remember thinking how awesome it was that Dan was teaching at his old high school. I was wrong.
According to the report, the administrators at his high school where he taught put the burden on the student who reported being molested by Dan; they asked the student, "What do you want us to do?" The school put Dan on leave, but they didn't contact the authorities or go public with the information. And that's why it happened again. I'm glad that Stanford immediately contacted the authorities when new allegations were made.
everything sucks

Yes, there were reports on this, without details, in October.
