Elway takes a H-U-U-G-E  sack - Redrum - 10-14-2010

He already walked a bit pigeon-toed...with added gimpiness for a career of abuse.   Gawd knows how he\'s walking now.

I think the difference between the Bernie Madoff victims and Elway is that Elway still has some money left.  I would think that guys who run Ponzi schemes against NFLers  are much more likely to get shanked on just some otherwise normal prison day.

Odd that the article mentions his wife leaving him.  That happened, according to the linked article, somewhere in 2002.  The linked SI.com article also mentions that they had gotten back together after John worked to save the marriage.  And since 2002, there\'s been no mention of major tragedy, iirc.

He\'s got at least one of his kids at Stanford; can\'t be that bad!

Yeah, but I remember reading he sold his network of Colorado car dealerships for like $50 Million. I think he\'s had some other good plays too.

I wonder what that guy does with his days now. He looks pretty old and beat up every time they show a picture of him.

Elway did an excellent interview with Gary Radnich on KNBR a couple weeks ago.  You can find podcast here:

Despite the amazing contracts many athletes end up bankrupt shortly after their careers are over.  The expenditures keep racing out at the glory year pace, but the income sources dry up quite suddenly.

Elway has enough resources to park $15 million in an individual investment opportunity.   You can\'t really do that, if you don\'t have the assets.  So, I think that means he is doing just fine.

Based on the article, I think he has a decent chance of keeping his investment out of the Ponzi scheme allocations.  But either way, you don\'t allocate money to a niche investment firm without some understanding that you might lose the entire investment.

Played at Stanford, won Super Bowls, started successful multi-million dollar Colorado businesses, raised a child that went to Stanford and plays D-1 sports.

I suspect most people on this board would agree that seems like quite a successful life to date.

John Elway and Toby Gerhart, arguably numbers three and four on a list of all-time Stanford football greats, both wore 7. So does that make it less likely or more likely that the number will be retired?

I don\'t see it being retired solely in Toby\'s honor b/c that would seem a slight to Elway. On the other hand, wouldn\'t it be unprecedented to retire a number based on the accomplishments of two players?

Create a \'Ring of Honor\' of some such at the stadium and you don\'t have to retire any number.

I was reading the list of Madoff investors, and I knew one of the investors personally.  I have to say, I felt a little ambivalent seeing his name on the list.  He essentially made his money making usurious loans and seeing that he lost $15 million to Madoff made me feel bad, but not terrible.

Stanford has retired two numbers - 1 for Ernie Nevers and 16 for Jim Plunkett.  Yet nowhere will you find an acknowledgment of this at the stadium.  The north end of the stadium with the peristyles would be the perfect place to do so.  And Needle, I agree 100% that #7 should hang there with 1 and 16.

Re: Elway takes a H-U-U-G-E  sack - JeffInCorvallis - 10-15-2010

I believe there is some acknowledgement of the Nevers and Plunkett numbers over in the Hall of Fame, but you are right, none in Stanford Stadium.  Seems like we could do that.

#7 retired jointly for Elway and Gerhart - I think that would be really great.

Hey, that is a GREAT idea, since Stanford\'s football tradition seems to have vanished in the perception of the public. I wonder why they haven\'t done that. Perhaps its just not Stanford\'s style to glorify individuals in that way.
