Robert Woods, USC frosh WR, might be getting double duty as a defensive back.

Unless I am misunderstanding USC\'s situation - Redrum - 10-14-2010
They really don\'t NEED Woods to play DB. Â Or, maybe they do. Â I don\'t spend a lot of time thinking about it. Â But we NEED Marecic at LB, Â my guess is USC is in better shape with their DBs.
Man, do we ever need both Vaughters and Sarao. Â They could both see freshman playing time, Â and not because that\'s the optimal way to keep our defense on its feet or to develop them as players.

They didn\'t look all that against us, certainly. In fact, it looked like they could use the help. Isn\'t Shareece a girl\'s name? Â :D
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -

I think this is happening because of the upcoming limit on scholies.
Here in 2010 USC is suffering, but 2011 will be worse. Â 2012 will be brutal, and 2013 will be walk-on city. Â Therefore, any incoming 2010 athlete really should not be used because they could have eligibility in the dark 2013 & 2014 period. Â In 2014, USC should have 25 athletes coming in, but they will all be Frosh.
Woods\' timeline was already blown. Â Undoubtedly, Woods and the staff know he is gone after the 2012 season. Â So they likely let him play this year. Â Who knows? Â It may have even been an unwritten condition of his recruiting process.
In any event, he is a member of the 2010 recruiting class and his elibility is lost already. Â Thanks to normal injuries during the season, USC\'s 2 Deep at DB positions are likely starting to include other 2010 recruiting class players. Â As bad as it was to throw Woods out there, it will be a disaster if a DB true Frosh, or true Soph that has not played this year, runs out on the field in a late game nickel package.
Ahhhh..but using Woods in that DB role would preserve 2013 & 2014 options for others. Â Woods is a 5 star WR, and undoubtedly has played some DB in his past. Â He is ideal for USC\'s crazy situation. Â He is fast, he has talent, and most importantly using him allows the staff to keep a 2010 Frosh off the field in 2010.
But I am just loving the Kiffin problems. Â 2010 should be a golden year for SC relative to 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014. Â If this is the type of thing USC needs to do in 2010, I can\'t wait for 2012-2014. Â The likely early departures to the NFL, transfers and academic casualties will only make things worse.
At least in the short-term playing SC every year will likely be a good thing. Â Maybe by 2015 the Pac-12 will become the Pac-16 and the inequities of the proposed divisions will be addressed through a new wave of expansion.
Re: He\'s copying Marecic - readarmy1976 - 10-14-2010
Why do you think we need LBs? The only player we lose is Marecic. Well, and Amajoy but he doesn\'t play much. We return Thomas, Keiser, and Skov, then have somewhat talented and experienced players Debniak, Lueders, and Bergen returning. Then we got Hemschoot, very talented, and that guy from Arizona who has surprised. So, returning 3/4 with and then 3 rotation guys on top o that, I think we are good there.
Next year completely hinges on what Luck decides to do. He\'s having such a big year that he may very well leave, even though he isn\'t that kind of guy. :\'(
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -

If Luck is projected to go #1, I wonder if he doesn\'t have an obligation to accept that on behalf of Stanford football...
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -
Farm93 - 10-14-2010
Luck could clearly need to stay if...
1) he just enters an enormous Soph slump. Let\'s assume that does not happen.
2) he gets a major injury that raises serious questions. The injury would have to be bigger than Bradford level injuries. For Luck\'s sake let\'s assume that does not happen.
What about the world of wanting to stay?
1) He and the family might predict a devastating strike that creates uncertainty and erodes the power of the high draft picks. Unlikely
2) He and his family see the #1 pick going to a team that is just terrible and likely will remain terrible. Possible
Which teams are in the running at this point for the top pick.
The 0-5 SF 49ers and the 0-5 Carolina Panthers.
Amazingly both play each other. The "loser" will be more than a game ahead (behind?) the winner in the draft standings.
Imagine for a moment that the 49ers actually get the first pick. Good legacy, new stadium in the works, local angle, etc...
So there may be an opportunity to see the game that might one day be known in the NFL as the game that gave the loser a touch of Luck.
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -
fullmetal - 10-14-2010
I can\'t see the Panthers dumping Jimmy Clausen that quickly barring disaster, but it wouldn\'t be hard to see him turning into a bust as Alex Smith did.
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -
Farm93 - 10-14-2010
I don\'t think the Panthers or the Browns would pick Luck. Â But if the 49ers are first on the board, I would likely run to Vegas and bet every available dollar that Luck would be the #1 pick. Â And I hate to state the obvious, but I would fear that a certain coach might go there too.
But back to Luck...If he is projected to be the #1 overall pick at the end of the season, it would be too much to expect him to stay at Stanford.
I just hope that Luck is worthy of the hype because of the great things he did at Stanford in the second half of the 2010 season.
To be a real downer for the sake of argument - Redrum - 10-14-2010
Amajoyi...the progressively disappearing LB. Debniak...still looking for a natural position, much less playing time. Bergen hasn\'t displaced anyone ahead of him except when they\'re injured (has played well in reserve relative to the others). Keiser is a rush end who plays standing up. Good against the run, coverage not his gift If we were in the 4-3 he would not be an OLB. The same could be said for Thomas who seems a bit more lost in the other LB tasks that don\'t involve blitzing. Hemschoot (from Colorado) is intriguing but the current Endowed Chair for Being Intriguing is occupied by Debniak. Some thoughtful people said Lueders would be playing major minutes this season. Hasn\'t happened. He\'ll have to win the position the old fashioned way, learn it over time. Has the physical gifts.
Most of these guys above are not disasters or just eternally intriguing. Some are contributing and starting. But right now a converted fullback has them sitting on the bench. A part-timer is better than the alternatives and (to the point) is taking game experience from the guys who will have to carry the load next season. It\'s a tradeoff we\'re willing to make
now.
But our position next year will be better than the year after. 2012 Skov will be a senior, Keiser will be gone, Bergen will be gone. If you look into the future, we need three dominant middle linebackers ( Skov, Lueders and ...who? Can Vaughters play with those big boys? The coaching staff thinks so. They bet a scholarship on it. ) Three replacement OLBs,
true OLBs with coverage skills and closing speed. That is where Sarao is so intriguing. Can\'t teach game speed. He might be a MLB.
I think things will work out with Lueders, Vaughters and Sarao and one of our intriguing guys blowing up. But I hope we can parlay our success into another good LB class in 2012. Â And, of course, staff stability is the keystone. Â If Harbs is gone, Â our really good class could turn not-so-good.

Actually, I\'d lend more credence to the "eroded draft pay" theory than you do, Farm93. One of the chief demands of ownership is to reduce draft pay inflation, and the union have no reason to insist upon it: obviously yet-to-be-drafted players are not one of their direct constituencies. So I suspect we\'ll see something like the NBA pay scale for the draft, which obviously reduces the attraction of going pro early. That\'s neglecting the possibility of an actual strike or lockout, which I think is highly likely at this point. Will it be enough? Who can say.
Re: LB worrying: I\'m still a fan of the Coming Wideout Crisis theory myself. Do you really want Chris Owusu and Griff Whalen (and not much else) as your chief pass-catching threats? If you do you\'re...much more optimistic than I am.
Oooh, now we can talk about wide receivers - Redrum - 10-15-2010
Hey, I buy into the Coming Worldwide WR Crash also. I just got set off by the irrational exhuberance over our LB situation.
Patterson came in with high expectations and has remained fairly quiet. I honestly don\'t know much Jemari Roberts except that no one else does either. Freshman Keanu Nelson is both a WR/CB who had some people actually fighting over where he should play. But that was more of a which-
position-is-in-bigger-crisis kind of debate. Warren Reuland is hurt and there is speculation he\'s done. Drew Terrell is on scholarship and hurt.
Which is why 4-star Ty Montgomery is important as a 2011 commit and more important as a guy who has to live up to his rating. Or Amir Carlisle won\'t be a RB for long if he comes to the Farm. Jordan Richards, Devon Cajuste aren\'t chopped liver, but who knows if they are the kind of playmakers we need. Some people think Cajuste is the next Ed McCaffrey. Or not. So if washington is peddling a WR crisis I\'m buying. Attack of the massed possessiion receivers. gaaaah.
Bye week. Â I\'ll be all better next weekend.
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -

massed possession receivers...great, a true WCO without a deep threat.
surely some HS senior stud WR with a good academic resume wants to catch a few passes from Andrew Luck...if he stays...argh. Â after the impending WR crash comes the deflation of the Luck-for-four-years bubble! Â this market looks terrible from a realist\'s view :p
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -

This is why it is rather important to just enjoy 2010 for 2010. Â Those that want to see more in 2010 or explore growth possibilities for 2011 are not living in the moment.
A 35-0 win over what is a decent UCLA team in the Rose Bowl.
A convincing win in historic Notre Dame Stadium
A rare home win against USC
Those are all things to cherish. Â Very, very, very few years in Stanford football history have delivered so much.
And we are only half way through the season!
Damn, Farm93. I was enjoying the season - Redrum - 10-16-2010

I think he was just on campus, wasn\'t he? Â The fame of Stanford football spreads far and wide.
"Does the Dalai Lama know about this?" - Redrum - 10-16-2010
Yes, but he took a bigtime $$ beating against the spread vs. Oregon and is now posting that he thinks CBs and Safeties are the biggest recruiting need.
Re: He\'s copying Marecic -
Farm93 - 10-16-2010
I don\'t know. Â There were a lot of people on this board that were not too happy with the team pre-Oregon.
Since then the team is 1-1, and yet everyone is happy. Â :-?
