Moving up the rankings during the bye week! -

South Carolina just had a terrible final drive. Â Down by 3 they called time out after two different plays that went out of bounds. Â With no timeouts they elected to try one more play. Â With no timeouts the only viable play was a toss into the endzone. Â Tip, quick deflection and...interception.
Talk about bad timeout management. Â Spurrier will be the SEC\'s poster child. Â And that is hard to do with Miles in the same conference.
In any event. Â South Carolina was #10, so Stanford will likely move above the other USC.

Plus even more importantly, Ohio State is losing to Wisconsin 21-10 at the end of the 3rd quarter. This would move Oregon up to #1 and allow BSU to move up to no. 2. This would increase our chances to play in the Rose Bowl multi-fold if Wisconsin can hang on for another quarter.

Ohio State lost 31-18. Â Rose Bowl should be there if both we and Oregon win out. Â Still a long shot, but significantly less so than it was yesterday.

Don\'t forget: we have to root for Michigan State to lose too. I think it\'ll happen--they aren\'t that good; I think we could beat them--but still have to root for it.

Yes, but I\'m envisioning a Oregon-Boise State no1 vs no2 national championship game. Â If Boise State gets into the national championship game, I read somewhere that relieves the Rose Bowl of having to offer a slot to BSU and a Stanford-Michigan State/Big 10 is possible. Â Still a long ways from happening though.

The problem in all these scenarios is assuming that the Rose Bowl will pick Stanford. It took Texas over Cal once, so clearly the Rose Bowl has no problem abridging its tradition when its needs suit it.

WIM, the Rose Bowl had no choice in 2004. Â It HAD to take Texas. Â By the rules in place at that time, the #4 team received an automatic at-large berth. Â In the final regular season poll, Texas passed Cal to finish #4 in the BCS. Â
The Rose Bowl will always take a Pac 10 or Big 10 school if it has a choice. Â But we are a long way from Stanford being eligible to be considered an at-large team. Â Too many games yet to be played.

Definitely not true!
In that year, if a non-conference winner was in the 3rd or 4th in the BCS standings then it had to get one of the at-large invites.
Texas worked its political magic and essentially lobbied for the pollster votes. Â At the time Texas had been a tough luck runner up for a few years, and many felt it was quite deserving of getting into a BCS game. Â When the final polls came out, Texas had just enough support to get that automatic at-large bid.
The best thing for a 2nd place 11-1 Stanford team is for Oregon and Boise State to be in the BCS game. Â This would place the Big Ten champion in the Rose Bowl. Â In that world, the Rose Bowl would pick Stanford. Â Lots of uncertainties about the hypothetical, but the Rose Bowl pick would be very clear.
If Boise or TCU does not make the BCS game that is a problem. Â Say the BCS game is Oregon vs. Oklahoma. Â Then Boise/TCU would be in the Rose Bowl by rule, just as Texas slid in, and the Big Ten champ would be their opponent. Â Stanford could get an at-large bid elsewhere, but then Luck or JH will need to be the draw. Â That likely only happens if it is very clear that Luck and/or JH are NFL bound.
But none of these BCS possibilities will matter if Stanford is not a top 10 team with an 11-1 record.

Arkansas\' loss should help us as well (ranking that is... not with the Rose/BCS hopes). Didn\'t watch that game but judging by the final score of 65-43, so much for the vaunted SEC defenses!
