Montgomery Listed as a Soft Verbal - fyao - 10-17-2010
Montgomery, a 4-star WR and one of our earliest commits, is now listed as a soft verbal. This isn\'t good news, as we really need good receivers in our pipeline as Ryan Whalen is a senior. Does anyone know what\'s up?
Turns out, Georgia is still in the picture - Redrum - 10-17-2010
They actually showed interest in Montgomery early and haven\'t given up despite his verbal to us. And, he\'s visited, which Scout\'s software automatically interprets as a "soft verbal."
Best spin: this is just your typical position-covering by a commit who has not yet been admitted. Â Nothing special about Montgomery doing likewise. If Montag speaks favorably, UGA vaporizes.
Less best spin: Somebody else on the Booty reminded us of this: As a school that absolutely depends on a national reach for recruiting success, we are more vulnerable than most to "family" issues. Usually spelled M-O-M. How do the parents feel about not seeing their kid play in person, not being able to hug him, having him half a continent away? If the parents aren\'t on board with the value of the Stanford education, the lower our chances. Now, in Montgomery\'s case, he\'s a
Texas kid so its harder to figure the close-to-home argument. Might boil down to where aunts, uncles and in-laws live.

Also bad spin: Georgia is a real cesspool right now. The fans hate Richt and given the team\'s performance this season, it\'s not hard to see why. Given that, why the interest?

Hm. Â I wonder if the alumni club in Dallas needs to chip in with a few college counseling chats. Â I\'m heading up there in two weeks...

per Montgomery in a recent recruiting update, Stanford is his clear #1 but he is worried about admissions.

I live in Dallas, about five minutes from his school. Would it be illegal if I took him out to dinner...?
Kidding. But St. Mark\'s is a great school. I would think that they\'d be able to get him in, based on the competitiveness of his school. But I don\'t know what his ACT/SAT scores are...

Here is a neat story about a current Stanford student-athlete from St. Marks.
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/stan/sports/m-volley/auto_pdf/Vandermeerstory.pdf
Quote: He graduated as valedictorian from St. Marks School in Dallas with a 4.47 grade-point average and a perfect 1,600 on the college  boards. He also was captain of the volleyball, tennis and junior engineering teams, and president of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Club.
If Montgomery has a similar profile, then admissions should be no problem. ;)
Yeah, while other teens were getting to 1st base - Redrum - 10-18-2010
this guy was getting his jollies in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Club.

I find it kind of remarkable that a top-notch men\'s volleyball player would come out of Texas. Â Men\'s volleyball just doesn\'t get much press around here--the tall kids end up in football or basketball. Â Another niche sport St. Mark\'s has is rowing. Â Not many of the rowers are tall enough, it seems to me, to make it at top rowing schools.
Less remarkable is the hip disease research :p Â
(Well, his dad did help him land the research position...and that\'s pretty much half of the battle with such projects.)

that Asian-heritage rowers come out of Texas. ;)
After a while, you just have to accept: We live in a world of miracles, fullmetal.

don\'t forget the armchair-QB/coach aspect, although that in itself is almost required for most Texans :)
can\'t wait to see how the UCLA/UW game turns out. Â that\'ll be a nice little circle of death if UW beats UCLA...who beat Texas, who beat Nebraska, who beat UW.
also, i wish oregon state\'s receivers wouldn\'t have found out about their lethal case of dropsies until we played them.

Actually, we\'ve already got a good circle of death going:
UW > USC > Cal > UCLA > Texas > Nebraska > UW...
