Tragedy.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - yvonne - 10-17-2010

the Storke building, beloved by Garvin, and Garvin only.

Hoo boy - Redrum - 10-17-2010

My fraternity yearbook pic was of the gang in front of Ernies.  At least I got to point Ernie\'s out to my own Stanford student (the Redrumette) before the winnowing hand of the free market cut one of my memory\'s few remaining links with reality.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - Pastor - 10-17-2010

Does Ernie\'s closing really matter...I suspect that Cowell will be overcrowded by students being certified with conditions requiring medical marajuana.

But wait....Ernie\'s sold snacks too....hmmm

What the heck was Ernie\'s Liquors?

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - CowboyIndian - 10-17-2010

Is it still true that liquor can\'t be sold within a mile of campus?

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2010

There\'s a Safeway that is very close, if not a mile, to campus. It has a good selection of microbrews, so there you go.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - fullmetal - 10-17-2010

I think that\'s the Sharon Heights Safeway.  In the same shopping center is a liquor store, or at least there was one about 4-5 years ago...

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - Hansenjohn - 10-17-2010

Stores in Town and Country Village have been selling beer wine and liquor for at least 30 years.  Trader Joe\'s is there now.  In early 80\'s there was some other grocery store where we used to buy a case of beer, dump a bag of ice into it, and carry it right into the stadium.

Ah, those were the days.

I think the El Camino Safeway is even closer.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - Farm93 - 10-17-2010

The closest Safeway depends on where exactly you live on campus.  The updates to the El Camino Safeway definitely make it the bigger of the two, but for Sterling Quad types it is a bit easier to run up than push through the campus or the Shopping Center on the way to El Camino.

Of course, distance is not the only factor.  The shuttles make regular runs to the Wal-Mart in Mountain View off of Showers.  Wal-Mart\'s alcohol selection will be limited but the pricing is going to be better than Safeway.  Costco sells alcohol too, and I bet a lot of students know the way to the RWC CostCo and the MV CostCo off of 101.

Here is a Stanford Mag article with some of the history of the restrictions against alcohol surrounding campus:

The coffee house in Tressider has also sold beer and wine to consume on premises for several years, as have other places on campus.  At least as far back as 1980, students of legal age could buy beer at a bar at Encina Commons.

There\'s a Wal-Mart in Mountain View?  The apocalypse must be almost upon us.

I guess such a thing would not be tolerated in Palo Alto.

Probably the Lucky (or was it a Safeway?) that used to be in Town and Country Village where the CVS is now.

Re: The market at Town & Country - Nan3cy - 10-17-2010

It wasn\'t a Safeway OR Lucky -- I have a vague memory that it was called John\'s Market, but I could be completely off base about that. But if it was a chain it definitely wasn\'t one of the big ones.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - CompSci87 - 10-17-2010

Guess my memory was faulty on the name, but it was where CVS (formerly Long\'s) is now, right?

I did some googling to see if I could find a mention of the name on line... I found one person who said "does anyone remember the name?" and one who said "John\'s Valley (?)".

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - Ratmandoo - 10-18-2010

I remember it being called John\'s market. They had a really good deli there but it closed down about 10 years ago. I think the guy who ran the John\'s Market deli ended up moving that operation into Arrillaga and opened the Sports Cafe. But my memory is pretty foggy as well.

WalMart is on Showers, right before the Palo Alto/Mt. View border.

Re: The decline & fall of practically everything, - Farm93 - 10-18-2010

The Wal-Mart in MV is super busy too.  It is probably the most consistently crowded Wal-Mart in the South Bay.  Those Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos types may talk a good game about the negative impact of big box stores, but the business is good if you can get a store open.

Admittedly, Showers is also a big VTA hub, so the store does get a ton of bus customers from other towns.

If you are an alum, maybe you spend a few extra dollars for service, selection and convenience.  If you are a student with limited funds Wal-Mart and Costco are likely your choice.
