Oregon or UCLA? - Farm93 - 10-21-2010

The conflicts start today.

Should a Stanford fan want UCLA or Oregon to win today?

If UCLA wins...
Oregon is just one bad game at USC away from falling behind Stanford and UofA.
However Stanford\'s chances for at-large BCS opportunities probably go away.  And the conference gets more of that "Wacky Pac" type commentary

If Oregon wins...
Oregon solidifies its hold on the BCS invites and improves the odds of two BCS invites. A #1 Oregon helps the profile of the entire conference.
However, Stanford\'s odds of winning the conference get more bleak.

For me UCLA v Texas helps.  Thanks to UCLA\'s win at Texas, UCLA can win without too many "Wacky Pac" emerging.  And USC\'s Barkley to Woods combination is just solid enough that Oregon could stumble.

UCLA was devine agaist UW in 1999.  Maybe they will help again in 2010.  Go Bruins!

Re: Oregon or UCLA? - dabigv13 - 10-21-2010

I\'m rooting for the Bruins as well.

I\'d rather go to the Holiday bowl* than pickup Oregon\'s hand me downs in the Rose Bowl.

*Yes I know Alamo is now our #2 bowl, but I\'d much rather go to a bowl in San Diego than San Antonio.

I\'d not hold my nose at a hand me down Rose Bowl but I\'d much rather be a conference champion.   UCLA FTW !!!!

I\'ll be rooting for the Giants.

If UCLA can pull it off (about the same odds as Stanford/USC 2007), I will be foreced to root for the Trojans next week.

Re: Oregon or UCLA? - Farm93 - 10-21-2010

OK, forget I asked.  Oregon looks AMAZING.  UCLA is not bringing their Texas game, but they look OK.  However, they have no answer for anything that Oregon is doing.

The only positive is that this showing makes Stanford look pretty good.  I suspect people will begin to ask, "How good is Stanford to have produced a lead a half time in Eugene?"

The first half reinforces a thought I\'ve had before: it\'s really hard for me to conceive of Oregon losing more than one game, if they even lose that. And that\'s not all bad.

I do not see Oregon losing at home, that is for sure.  It will be great timing for the conference\'s TV deal, if Oregon gets into the BCS game.  If Oregon looks unbeatable then Stanford could get a nice BCS bowl too.

I think I can imagine that USC could beat Oregon in LA.  The problem with that would be USC would win.  Ugh.  Oregon would have no chance at the BCS game/ Stanford would still get the Pac-10\'s #2 slot, and would have almost no chance at any BCS game.

FWIW - the backdoor BCS thing seems weak, but several teams have shown that backdoor one year leads to conference and/or national championship opportunities the next year.

I am still rooting the same way. I want the Ducks to run the table and be in the NC game. I also happen to think that is likely. Plus, I do live in Oregon, so rooting for the Ducks is not too hard to do.

But first and foremost is the Cardinal. If--and it is a big but not insurmountable "if," we go 11-1, having lost only to the #1 team in the country at their house, a BCS bowl invite it a near certainty (I hope.). Would love to see us in the Rose Bowl against MSU, even Iowa. I would rather not play Boise, because I think they are the first or second best team in the country and--assuming no losses--truly deserve to be in the NC game.

I respect Boise, but personally don\'t see them as the #1 or #2 team in the country.  They barely beat a Virginia Tech team that, while it has improved lately, lost the following weak to James Madison (!), and then Boise struggled, at home, to beat Oregon State.  IMO, there has to be a higher criteria than beating up on a bunch of WAC teams to earn the status of a #1 team.
