Worst Game of the Year! - Farm93 - 10-23-2010

The weather was bad, and the crowd was looking for opportunities to go home.  The team played down to Wazzu\'s level.  Wazzu played with some intensity even when the game was out of reach.

The Stanford secondary let far too many plays happen.  The pressure was late on the Wazzu QBs.  And the non-starters were sloppy.  Oh, and for the first time this year the team had a ton of bad penalties.

Reunion LSJUMB was impressive though.

I wanted to chalk it up to the wet, raw weather.  That, however, would be a bad excuse because the team will be playing in Seattle next week.

Several players with noted injuries participated in drills, but then did not really appear in the game.  I think I expected that.  Still I imagined the team would win by 21 or so.

Oh well, if that is the worst game the team plays this year then they picked the right opponent.

Agree that this was the worst the team has looked all year. This was clearly Luck\'s worst game as well -- featuring, among other things, his worst-looking interception and I believe his first delay of game penalty of the season.

I\'m hoping it\'s mostly due to the team taking this game for granted.

Also, Harbaugh played this game pretty conservatively.  Lots of handoffs to the running backs, and Taylor and Wilkerson had career games.  Very few long passes, lots of ball control passes for first downs.  As a consequence, Stanford won time of possession nearly 2:1.  He rested several starters with nagging injuries - Owusu and Howell.  I know Owusu dressed and warmed up.
The only thing I\'d have liked him to be more conservative with would be pulling key starters earlier.  I\'d have liked to see Luck, Mareic, and perhaps Ryan Whalen sit once Stanford was up 31 - 7.  Loukas can hand off as well as Luck can and on a wet and dispirited day, the chance of injury was too high for my taste, once the game was in hand.
PS.  Speaking of Taylor\'s game, he looked good all around, pushing for short yardage, running outside, and most importantly after last time, holding on to the damn ball.  He earned his 143 yards rushing, 11 receiving, and 2 TDs for his 4th 100 yards game of the season.

If it helps folks, Oregon partisans were similarly bummed by their recent meager 10 point victory over WSU. It didn\'t seem to hurt their preparation for UCLA. At least we didn\'t have our starting QB knocked out of the game.

Face it, WSU is playing much better than they were earlier in the season though the Dr Lou-loo types will never acknowledge it. When we have our own network we can address these issues. They were engaged and we were workman like. Nothing new.

I was a scout team redshirt in 1970 when we played Purdue around the 4th or 5th game. Notre Dame had beaten them 48-0 the week before so all week in practice our guys were doing the "49-0" chant. The coaches kept saying they were a solid club and we had to focus, but c\'mon, we were Stanford Men, we could read the papers; those guys sucked!

So we got spanked, 26-14.

Washington\'s 44-14 beatdown by AZ may present a similar challenge next week. Or, we could be refocussed and dispatch the Huskies with prejudice.

Happily, multi-phrenic Bares / Riley put out a Stanford-esque effort against ASU so maybe they got that out of their system. At the least it provides JH something else to work with for this year\'s Big Game.
