The ranks of the unguaranteed in the NBA  .... - Leftcoast - 10-26-2010

While Landry Fields is starting tonight many other NBA hopefuls without guaranteed contracts had their stadium dreams squashed.   Some notables didn\'t even get training camp invites (are you listening from Turkey, Pac 10 POY, Jerome Randle)?

Here\'s a list by team of those who made it and those who didn\'t.

You\'ll see some very familiar names (Jason Collins survived with the LA Clippers, a team which might be good enough to make the playoffs in Turkey), some we used to know (Ike Diogu, Brian Cardinal, Adam Morrison all got bad news)  and some names which sound vaguely familiar  (Luke Jackson (thumbs down) and Jeremy Lin (thumbs up)).  College fame is fleeting and some of those can\'t miss players somehow do.

It is Pro basketball.

The numbers just do not support long careers.  There are hundreds of college programs pumping out players dreaming of the NBA each year.  Those masses then mix with hundreds of international guys.

Meanwhile the NBA only has room for a few hundred slots.

To make it worse, clearly age zaps that vertical and that recovery ability.  There are plenty of statistics to suggest that a player in their late 20s is over the hill.

While everyone fixates on Kobe, Lebron, Shaq type stars, the league thrives on the souls of role players that basically bust their butts primarily in practice for a few minutes of game time.

FWIW, I would not be shocked if Fields career lasts 3 years or less.  If it happens, I wouldn\'t call that a failure.  One or two years in the league in any role is definitely an accomplishment.

And FWIW, there are ways to make pretty decent money in Europe & Asia playing hoops, at least for a while.

Okay, now I\'m officially confused. (Not an unusual condition, I admit.) Shouldn\'t Landry\'s name be on the list of guys who made it??? :-?

He\'s made it for the moment, but obviously things can change, and quickly.

As to the "decent money" part, if you\'re any good you can get six figures tax free (the team pays your taxes for you) plus a car and free housing. It\'s not a bad way to make a living, assuming you can adjust to life in a foreign country.

The list is guys with non-guaranteed contacts who made rosters. Landry\'s must have been guaranteed. Maybe all drafted players get guaranteed money now that the draft is only two rounds? Not sure.

non-guaranteed?

Landry Fields has no place to live?

Re: The ranks of the unguaranteed in the NBA  .... - washingtonismoney - 10-27-2010

First-round draft picks get guaranteed contracts; it\'s at the team\'s discretion to give out guaranteed contracts to second-round picks. I presume Landry has a partially guaranteed contract.

If you\'re really good, by the way, it\'s better to be drafted in the second round: that way, the expiration of your first contract turns you into an unrestricted free agent rather than a restricted one.

Years ago I would say, he\'ll end up in the trailers.

What is the bottom rung on the housing draw nowadays?

Yeah, my first impulse was also, "He\'s gonna have to live in Manzanita."

Damn, nothing like anachronistic "back when I was in college" humor to make you realize how old you are...

Hey!   I drew into the Suites their first year and, when construction fell behind, spent 1 quarter in the trailers.   It was really not bad at all - of course we were good cooks so having our own kitchen, dining room and eating room was perfect.

Now the gentlemen down the street that had a tree fall through their trailer during that year\'s El Nino storms might disagree.

"Manzanita - There\'s nothing so permanent as temporary housing."
