This week in Sagarin ratings: up to #4 in PREDICTOR. He likes us, he really likes us.

Such a shame they lost to Oregon. We\'d be #1, baby!

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - dabigv13 - 10-31-2010

Shouldn\'t have been jumped by Nebraska, and we should be higher in the Coaches\' poll, the one that matters for BCS.

The lack of margin of victory in the computer rankings, combined with the overinflation of the SEC and Big 10\'s reputations continues to hurt us, and could cost us a BCS bowl game.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - washingtonismoney - 10-31-2010

Margin of victory is irrelevant to the computers--they took it out after the uproar that Nebraska made it into the title game way back in 2000 over Oregon. That\'s why Sagarin\'s PREDICTOR measure (which the casinos use to set their lines) likes us better than his ELO_CHESS measure (which the BCS uses).

Meanwhile, it\'s not totally unjustifiable for Nebraska to be ranked ahead of us. They lost to Texas, true, but on the other hand they\'ve beaten Oklahoma State (which is a one-loss team) and handed Missouri their first loss. Both of those wins are probably better, as a CV line, than anything Stanford can boast.

The team that\'s unjustifiably ranked ahead of us is Ohio State. They\'ve beaten no one that\'s currently ranked, and their loss (@ Wisconsin) is much worse than our loss (@ Oregon).

Well, if you use common opponents as an indicator, then who had the better victory over Washington--Stanford or Nebraska?

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - Farm93 - 10-31-2010

As long as Luck is playing the team rankings will not matter.  If Stanford finishes 11-1, then Stanford will be far and away the second highest Pac-10 team.  And as the second best Pac-10 team they will get BCS at-large consideration.

What really matters is that LSU, Alabama and Auburn knock each other off.  Why?  Because that non-AQ has got to make it into the BCS game.  Boise State/TCU or Utah will qualify for a BCS bowl.  That is almost certain.  Stanford\'s best bet at an at-large is with the Rose Bowl.  So that non-AQ has got to make the BCS championship game to clear the path.

Sadly, I am 100% certain that a 1 loss Alabama is going to pass those non-AQ teams.  So...LSU needs to beat Alabama this weekend in Baton Rouge, and then Alabama needs to prove they were the best and beat Auburn at home.

Given LSU\'s shaky wins and Auburn\'s late loss that should be enough to get Boise on through.  FWIW Boise deserves to go on through.  The SEC teams voluntarily schedule 4 cupcakes at home.  Then because they all do the same thing the conference looks great.  Some one team will survive with 0 or 1 loss, just by luck.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - jayasena - 11-01-2010

No change in our BCS ranking this week at #13. Arizona also stays put at #15.

TCU jumped over Boise State to #3 this week. If TCU can handle current BCS #5 Utah on the road next weekend, they should be able to hold off Boise. However, as Farm93 pointed out, a 1-loss SEC team may still be able to jump them.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - dabigv13 - 11-01-2010

I wouldn\'t be surprised if a one loss Oklahoma or Nebraska wouldn\'t jump them as well.

I\'m definitely in the minority but I\'m hoping for a meltdown November....Boise State, TCU, and Utah all to lose once, Oregon to lose to Arizona and Oregon St., and Stanford to win the Pac outright. I suppose once we\'ve made it that far, we can also hope for LSU to beat Alabama, Bama to beat Auburn, and South Carolina to beat LSU. At that point Stanford could be knocking on the NCGs door. If a 2 loss team can play for the NC, why not a 1 loss Stanford?

FWIW....Stanford # 8 in the ESPN Power Poll

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - fullmetal - 11-01-2010

I\'m a little worried that UW was just that inept...beware complacency.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - Leftcoast - 11-01-2010

UW is not great this year - they\'re a lower tier team and riddled with injuries but don\'t forget they DID beat USC so they aren\'t WSU level inept despite the relative scores of the two teams against Stanford.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - fullmetal - 11-01-2010

Well, in the rain with an injured Locker, I would hesitate to say that this was the same team that beat USC.  The Huskies are 1-3 since the USC game, with the one win coming in 2OT as Oregon State elected to go for two and failed on the last possession.  UW could have easily lost that game as well.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - Leftcoast - 11-01-2010

It\'s all in how you look at it, FM.

Before the game started I wouldn\'t have said they were inept.  The Huskies had already knocked off both USC and Oregon St., two teams that I think will end up as top 5 Pac 10 team when all is said and done.

True, they\'ve had some stinkers as well but I didn\'t see 41-0 coming.  Did you?

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - fullmetal - 11-01-2010

After Nebraska\'s pasting of UW (56-21), it was definitely possible.  When I heard that Locker would play, but not at 100%, I had a feeling UW would not score many points.  Stanford\'s defense can sack a QB, and I think the worsening of Locker\'s hairline rib fracture happened on some such sack.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - Leftcoast - 11-01-2010

Good call by you.

To this point I\'ve had UW and Cal in that "not-sure-what-you\'re-going-to-get" category.  Both had been capable of both a good-game or an absolute dud but as the season rolls on both are putting up more former than the later.   Both teams seem to be wearing down - physically and emotionally.   Nice not to see the same from our Cardinal - we\'ve certainly displayed the same symptoms in years past.

Re: Stanford # 10 in AP Poll - fullmetal - 11-01-2010

If Locker was at 100%, I would have been a little more unsure about the game.  I did know that Nebraska hung half a century on UW though, so I felt confident in the offense.  Winning shootouts in the postseason is great...getting into shootouts during the season causes white hairs!
