Interview with Griff Whalen - Bruce Wang - 02-10-2014

Amusing anecdote about the Stanford women's soccer team.

He mentions that he and some teammates might go back to Stanford to train during the off season.  Something I've wondered about is how much contact they have with current players.  Is that some sort of NCAA violation?  I hope not.  Can you imagine, the Shermanator sharing tips with the DBs?  ADB with the WRs?

The new football facility has a locker room dedicated to alums in the pros. I'm also as certain as I can be that there's no violation in talking to professional athletes while you're still a student athlete.

That's what I would have guessed, but given how byzantine NCAA regulations are and how inconsistently they are applied, they had me musing about whether giving muffins to recruits was a violation.

I've heard there were quite a few NFL players working out at Stanford lately perhaps due to the CBA negotiations.  Most of them took a group trip to Vegas for the Super Bowl.  Stanford often has NFL guys around during the off-season.

I recall there was a bit of a flap about Bill Walsh supposedly bringing in Joe Montana to talk to recruits.  Of course that was some time ago and my recollection is that it was recruits, not current students.

Talking to recruits is VERY different from talking to players.  Players will be there to work out for spring practice and on their own over the May-July timeframe.  NFL players will be there too for much of that time, and there's no issue with them all using the same facility.  It's only when money gets involved that the NCAA gets worried.
