If he isn't the most frustrating player ever for Stanford hoops fans to watch play, the list can't be very much longer.

He's Lamar Odom 2.0.

If those of you who were watching can't guess, we lost to a wholly inept Washington team, 64-60. Randle missed a free throw with 49.6 seconds to go, missed a short one in the lane with 18.5 seconds to go, and was called for charging while trying to feed Powell under the basket while driving the lane -- all of which occurred with Washington leading just 62-60. He also missed a running 26-footer at the buzzer, though it was a tough shot and wouldn't have affected the outcome anyway.
You forgot the two turnovers [one by Powell; one by Randle] in the last 60 or so seconds to go along with the Randle charge.
But, really, was this outcome a surprise, or was it the same old same old?Â
Seems to me it was the latter, last week's game against K.al notwithstanding. Indeed, for whatever perverse reason, the one team that we seem to have done strangely well against in the Dawkins era has been K.al...Of course, they've been to the Big Dance and we haven't, so it's kind of a hollow success story.
Once again, we managed to find a way to lose a close one -- our signature outcome...

That was just a terrible game, almost unwatchable in the second half. I can't even count how many times UW guards beat us off the dribble on the perimeter, leading to a foul or an easy shot. I guess that's what happens when you only have 1 real guard.Â
Garvin, on the last play Randle dished to Huestis. Either that was a terrible call by Dawkins (having Randle drive into a thicket of defenders), or Randle just didn't execute. I'm inclined to believe the former.

Lunardi has us as a 10-seed today. I think we're still in good shape barring any more bad losses.

Are you saying that Randle failed to execute orders or that Dawkins failed to give any?

One other note: the play that worked by getting Randle the foul and nearly a three point play late in regulation was the play that Stanford absolutely killed the Huskies with at Maples - Randle at the top, a pick at both sides of the top of the paint, and him driving at his choice. He could either split the picks, or work to his left or his right, depending on how the defenders played it.Â
Why that play appeared exactly once in the second half is a mystery to me. Instead, we often had him trying to run through baseline screens without the ball to spot up in either corner or wing, and Brown up top, whose driving ability is not nearly at Chasson's level.
One other thing I wonder about - it seems that the sets that are run are often "single option" - they are designed to get one particular player in one particular situation. If that doesn't work out, they either reset or freelance. It just looks too simple and easy to disrupt.
As for Powell, I just wish he would finish AT the rim more often, rather than trying to flip the ball up from a foot or three away.

Anybody who still thinks this team is going to the big dance is borderline nutso. The only consistency in the Dawkins era is the team's inconsistency. They can't sustain a high (or low) level of play for more than 2-3 games.
I'm beyond frustration - closer to exasperation, which in another month will turn into anticipation of a new direction and a better future for Stanford men's hoops.

SF88--
My thought was, after the win in Haas, that they would have to win 3 of 4 at home and 2 of 4 on the road, to finish at 11-7, 20-10 overall, and win one game in the conference tourney. UW in Seattle was probably the second-easiest road game they had left. So now they either have to win both at WSU and ASU or UofA, OR show an ability to beat UCLA at home. Without pulling another stinker like last night in any of their remaining other home games, say against a back-on-balance Colorado.
After watching yet another late game collapse of the offense, I'm not at all sanguine.

Yup, I agree with you. Our margin for error continues to drop. I think UW is the last "should have won" that we could afford to lose. My guess is we can lose two more games: Arizona on the road and UCLA at home, plus one more game in the conference tournament. That means we'll have to beat Colorado at home and ASU on the road, and not totally blow a game (like USC or Utah at home, or WSU on the road). We probably do have to win our opening round game in the tournament as well, but assuming we are not in the top-4, that should be against a bottom of the P12 team.

Yeah, what do you think the chances of a Dawkins-led team having that kind of consistency? I think they're about the same as this team's chances of making the Big Dance - Slim to None, and Slim is out to lunch.
