OK, have your wild party, your ticker tape parade, your speeches, and then, Bay Area, get your butts on down to Stanford Stadium on Saturday!!!
Re: Giants win the Series - mark3k - 11-02-2010
Well said, Jeff! Anyone have any idea how the attendance numbers are looking for Saturday?
I understand that the Giants have given the Bay Area baseball fever, but this is supposed to be a "football town", and anyone who would pay those absurd prices to sit in a crummy stadium to watch a crummy ______ (insert C.a.l, Raiders or 49ers) team, with a bunch of wanna-be tough guys cussing all around them, is a moron, when you can come sit in Stanford Stadium and watch this #10/12 team play a conference-critical game against #13 Arizona!
I know I\'m preaching to the converted on this Board, but if we have empty sections come Saturday, it will be a real shame (and hard for me to keep arguing that JH should stay here for the next 40 years, so he can retire as a JoePa/Bo/Woody-like legend).

Attendance is supposed to be typical (ly bad). I\'m guessing somewhere in the very low 30\'s. It\'s too bad because this game is one of the most important games for Stanford in the past 20 years.
We have met the enemy and he is us - Redrum - 11-02-2010
Well, not
us particularly...but my guess is the thing that launches the Harbaugh show to a bigger, more appreciative venue will be the continued anemic response and low number of spectators. Â If I thought it would make a difference, I\'d buy season tickets and give them away to people who
promised they\'d show up. Â As it is, Â the apathy just makes us look baaaad. Â Harbaugh says the players deserve better...and he\'s right. Â At some point his willingness to push the stone up the hill will cease.

To paraphrase Willem Defoe in the Life Aquatic, I hear what you\'re saying, but I think you misjudge the crowd.
Even if Stanford were a rabid football school, the pure numbers don\'t add up for us. Figuring at least 50% of the graduating class leaves, and Stanford only has 1700 a class, we\'d need 60 years worth of graduating classes to fill the stadium, and that\'s presuming that every Stanford student is a potential season ticket holder.
No matter how popular we can make football amongst the Stanford fans, until we can somehow bring in large numbers of the community without Stanford ties, the stadium will only be full when we have lots of visiting students. I honestly can\'t think of a comparable football school with our demographic challenges, so 30k really is a pretty good turnout.

Add family for half the alumni in the area and the community folks...maybe some for the faculty/staff as well? Â But you\'re right...Stanford just isn\'t a large school.

Not what I expected at all. I mean finally doing it. Â The three of us watched from the couch. Â My wife had a look of constant dread the entire game (1962, 1989 and 2002 scars run deep) and when Cruz hit the dinger, she went completely white. Â I helped my son with his calculus through the top of the 9th and he assured us that a 2 run cushion was plenty with Lincecum, Lopez and/or Wilson ready to finish it off. Â So they clinched, my son said "This is kind of anticlimactic," and my wife promptly fell asleep. Â Then the guys next door shot off fireworks and people were screaming in the streets, and you could tell this is a BIG DEAL.
There is good and bad to having an office on Market Street. Â I would have a great view of the parade if I didn\'t have a site visit scheduled in the East Bay at 1. Â What are the chances of making my way to the Bridge through a million people and a thousand burning couches? Â Looks like I\'m missing the parade. Dammit.
My son and I plan to haul our butts down to Stanford Stadium Saturday evening no matter how many others do. Â There are six million people in the Bay Area. Â You wouldn\'t think filling that stadium for a top 15 match-up would be that tough.
An attendance theory -
97fan - 11-02-2010
I agree that we\'re never going to fill the stadium with Stanford alums, but 30,000 would be a pathetic attendance figure for this game. Stanford is off to its best start in 40 years, and it\'s coming off an 8-4 season, the school\'s best in almost a decade. This game, against a top-20 team, is probably the second-best match-up on the home schedule this year.
Fans are always offering pet theories on why Stanford\'s attendance has fallen off so much over the decades. The beer ban seems like one popular scapegoat. I wonder if changing demographics on the Peninsula, coincident with the rise of Silicon Valley, are a major factor. In the golden era of Stanford football attendance, the 70s and earlier, wasn\'t the Peninsula\'s population significantly less transient? I wasn\'t around then, but the sense I have is that there were fewer transplants from other parts of the country, and also fewer immigrants living near Stanford at that time. Most Peninsula residents were not Stanford alums, of course, but they grew up in the community, and Stanford football was a major part of the sports landscape.
Isn\'t the Peninsula considerably different today, with far fewer people who have longstanding roots in the community? It\'d be interesting to see data on this, but I suspect it\'s a large part of the problem. Unfortunately, the demographic trend will continue to get worse in coming years.

I will honestly be surprised if the stadium is not close to capacity. Â All ten of my season tickets will be used on Saturday, and at least five or six people beyond that will be joining us for the day. Â A lot of fun things happening on campus on Saturday before the game (swimming/diving, water polo, WBB)--great day to bring a crowd.

Here is my measure of fan interest:
http://www.stubhub.com/stanford-football-tickets/stanford-vs-arizona-11-6-2010-933140/
Not that I am advocating or discouraging this as the way to acquire or dispose of tickets, but it is a good way to tell how popular an event is.
To me the prices are very solid. A bit lower than the prices for the Huskies-Stanford game last weekend, but quite good for Stanford. Big Game, of course, has higher prices, but there seems to be more than pedestrian demand for the two remaining Stanford football home games.
(Some people are unreasonable in what they are asking - pay no attention to the top of the prices, but the bottom end of the prices means that everything cheaper has sold - so that is a good estimate of the spot prices for tickets.)
We could just lease San Jose St.\'s 30K stadium - Redrum - 11-02-2010
they won\'t be needing it much longer.
dabigv, Â Stanford\'s fanbase situation is, Â in historical analogy, Â like that of the Confederacy in the Civil War. Â The South had an advantage in military leadership, Â but otherwise all the numbers-- population base, industrial base-- all favored the Union in the long run. Â Â No, we don\'t have a built-in advantage like Kal or other big factory schools. Â The Gods must hate us for dropping 2 NFL franchises and 2 MLB franchises into one 40 mile square live attendance area. Â Stanford must build a following in the non-student base. Â Other than being wildly extravagant with freebie tickets and wildly extravagant with a certain coach\'s salary, Â I don\'t know what else we can do but try to gain on the problem inch-by-inch. Â But the low attendance bugs Harbaugh and the time may run out on us before we get to where we need to be.

Leftcoast - 11-02-2010
I\'m with Renaissance man. Â I think the stadium will be near-full this Saturday. Â In general attendance has been improving, as expected, during Harbaugh\'s tenure. Â Whether it\'s improving fast enough is a different question.

Quote:Wow. I guess a new stadium wasn\'t the answer. Who would have guessed?
Other than the old stadium was on the verge of being declared unfit for public occupancy by the County of Santa Clara (for real) and there wouldn\'t have been an on-campus facility for football at all, I guess no, it wasn\'t the answer.

Give up on Garvin, Jacketree. Â It\'s chipped in a stone tablet buried in his basement underneath the Dana Delaney shrine that Dan Marino is the devil and Daniel Ortega is his prophet, Guy Benjamin was shafted, the \'72 Ink Bowl was thrown despite his best efforts and never, ever, EVER pass a chance to complain about the new stadium.
Well, three out of four ain\'t bad.
And why get in the way? Â It\'s cheap entertainment even if I have to say I\'d give up my signed John Elway jersey before I\'d trade my new seats \'n eats for the old version. Â

Go Giants! Â Fear the Beard! Â Fear the Freak! Â Sweet Torture. Â Don\'t Mess With SF! Â Don\'t Bet Against These MiSFits! Â My Life Is Now Complete.
Just a few of the signs I saw in the million or more people on the streets of SF yesterday. Â Ticker tape downtown on the same route the team took in 1958 when they arrived. Â
I\'ve been celebrating since Monday night when all of us at the Valley Tavern on 24th went absolutely nuts with joy. Â I believe there were victory shots and lots of them, but I can\'t verify much that happened after that. Â I\'ve been an honest to goodness die-hard Giants fan my entire life so this is tough to match. Â My brother and I just ran around the streets yelling and high fiving strangers. I may have stopped by my office on Tuesday afternoon, but realized that my career prospects were actually better if I just took my hungover carcas back to my house. Â My first Rose Bowl in 2000 was special, but this was bigger for me. Â
As for Saturday, I\'ll be there. Â I\'m trying to get my friends in the area more excited about getting tickets, but the truth is, even though they are alums and live in the area, they are just not sports fans. Â They are happy when the team wins and they go to a game every year or two, but they don\'t have the fever. Â One friend has a kid who is getting really interested and it seems that he and I will be able to convince them to commit the time to getting season tickets and actually going to the games. Â
Go Stanford!
Cheers,
Pete F.

Best sign I\'ve seen from a friend\'s facebook page:
Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, hide yo husband, cause the giant\'s rapin\' errrbody out here.
She had a pretty good sign as well, What Texas does big, SF does Giant!
