Spectacular Team, Coaches and Game/Pathetic Crowd -
stanfan - 11-07-2010
We came down from the Northwest to see the game.  Very disappointing crowd...especially for a game of this magnitude.  Wake up and smell the Roses!  Memo to Stanford Fans:  If you want to keep Coach Harbs and  the remarkable program he is building, we need a crowd that matches the quality of the teams he is building.   I fear this is the price of letting Stanford football slide for so long.   We have great coaches, great kids, a truly wonderful stadium to see a game.  All we need is fans.

I thought the crowd was pretty good. This is only the first year after our first bowl game in years. Arizona, though a good, top-20 team, is not a big football name and most casual fans would not be excited about the matchup. The Giants just won the World Series and have the best ballpark in the world and they don\'t sell out. Most teams get their big attendance increases the year AFTER they win a championship. Stanford is no different. It takes time to overcome the awful recent history of the football program. You obviously did your part, I\'m doing mine and over time, the crowds will increase.
Go Card.
Cheers,

Pete:  I agree that we are now paying price for the University\'s neglect of the football program over several years, and that building attendance can take time.  However, my basic point is that I don\'t believe we  have time and yet more resources need to be brought to bear. Â

The crowd is getting better by the way. Â Here\'s some comparables for two "non-marquee" teams from this year and 2008. Â (Had to use two years ago due to the alternating venue scheduling.)
Arizona 2008: Â 30,689
Arizona 2010: Â 43,506 Â (42% increase)
Wa St 2008: Â 26.663
Wa St 2010: Â 36,679 Â Â (38% increase)
So no sellouts but a 40% increase in attendance is nothing to sniff at.

The crowd is fine. Â I understand that people across the nation would expect a game with that kind of importance to get at least 50,000 in the stands.
I definitely understand that this will not happen routinely at Stanford. Â So many things work against Stanford. Â Private school, wealthy communities, a large percentage of immigrants, millions of transplants from other parts of the USA, ample TV options, etc., etc.
I know fans of other programs would look at that crowd of that size and worry that the AD\'s bills will not get paid if attendance does not pick up. Â Stanford has a different business, err non-profit, model so all will be fine.

TV numbers -

TV numbers were not good either, apparently...
Quote:The 2.8 overnight rating ranks as the third-lowest in the five-year history of the program. A week earlier, Oregon-USC drew a 5.3 rating.

Farm 93:  Stanford\'s business model has been a flop.  It is not fine; it needs football revenue.  That is why the University has recommitted to football.  If we want to stay on the right track (and by far our best opportunity to do so, is to keep Coach Harbaugh),  the stadium needs to be filled and his compensation (and I include his staff) increased.  Without  those two components, IMHO, he will not stick around and we will quickly backslide.  Your apologia for poor attendance is not especially compelling.  We need to find about 10,000 more fans per game on a regular basis.
Interesting blog post from a year ago -

A TCU blogger had this to say last year, when attendance was not so hot for a top-10 team.
Quote:Home: Amon G. Carter Stadium
Capacity: 44,008
TCU Average Home Attendance over last 2 ½ seasons (2007-current): 31,094 (# of games=16)
TCU Average Home Attendance this season through 4 games: 34,269
