Congratulations to women\'s field hockey -

Women\'s field hockey won their NCAA play-in game this morning, beating UMass on their home turf 2-1 to qualify for the final 16 that will be announced tonight. Â I\'m hoping they don\'t get shipped to Maryland or North Carolina for their next game (c\'mon, Syracuse!).
But the march to Capital One Women\'s dominance begins! X-Country, Field Hockey, Soccer and Volleyball!

P.S. BTW, anyone else noticing how heavily ESPN is promoting the Capital One Cup? Â Anyone know something about the backstory of how it got invented, driving forces behind it? Â I\'m interested if it was simply a way to get out from under Stanford\'s dominance of the NACDA award.

Problem: Stanford\'s crazy dominance in women\'s sports and olympic sports.
Solution: Develop some award that rewards winning in football
I can imagine the initial discussion....Oh yes! Â This will be brilliant. Â Stanford never, ever does well in football. Â We will all get to promote a contest between SEC, Big12 and other real programs and get lots of exposure.
And then I can imagine those same folks reading the BCS standings recently...What?!!?!?!? Â They are #6 in the BCS and may rise if the human polls catch up to the computers? Â But that would mean Stanford will be in the lead in both the men\'s and women\'s versions. Â Can we change the formula? Â Maybe only give out football to the AQ teams or something? Â Anything. Â Gawd dangit!
Also, none of the programs around Stanford in the BCS standings have any chance of winning this credit card title, so Stanford will be AHEAD of the main competitors on the men\'s side if things hold the rest of the year in football.

I think this reverse schadenfreude bodes well for our basketball teams :D Â What a good year for the traditional basketball powers to not do so well in football.
