All Texas All the Time! - jayasena - 11-11-2010

Longhorn network is officially a go: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/ncaa/11/10/texas-tv-network.ap/index.html

Quote:"We felt a Texas network would work better than people seeing a 12th of Texas on a conference network," Dodds said.

One more reason to be happy the expansion to PAC-16 didn\'t happen.

The only good thing I can think of is that maybe Texas Rowing will get some air time.  Other than that, I mean, I don\'t even get cable...or watch TV outside of a sports bar these days.

I guess Oklahoma may be OK because it is pretty big, but the other Big 12-2 teams might as well give up athletics.

Those programs felt like athletic safety schools for those that don\'t get offers to Texas before this deal.  Now, those programs will have to compete against a conference rival with an unbelievable financial resource advantage.

I\'m sure Kansas will close the Phog strictly on your say-so, Farm93.

I wonder if this will have any market penetrance past the state of Texas. I\'m somewhat skeptical this will be the big cashcow people are assuming, because football and basketball games are already televised through other channels, and I find it hard to believe people will pay much money to watch baseball, volleyball, or track/field.

Re: All Texas All the Time! - fullmetal - 11-11-2010

Well, there are also football replays, basketball replays, etc etc.  And there are also insider reports, team reports, maybe a sportscenter version of a news show for Texas, game previews with scouting reports on opponents with clips from coaches, etc.  I guess they\'ll ad time on the channel too.

Obviously they will all try to compete, but financially the 7-9 teams will be better off moving to a different conference.  They lost a bunch of their revenue sharing to keep Texas.  And now that same big monster will be bringing in tons of new cash.  Texas already had an AD budget far larger than the others, and now it will just get silly.

I would guess that the MWC will be calling a few of those programs this week.  Speaking of Kansas, Kansas and Kansas State would make very logical additions to the MWC.

Yes, I never go to Kansas without my pitons and carabiners.

Ski Kansas!

Re: All Texas All the Time! - Farm93 - 11-12-2010

The Cow is cute, but last I checked Colorado and Utah were not exactly on the Pacific or even in the Pacific Time Zone.  And yet, there they are as members of the Pac-12.

Kansas and Kansas State would be excellent additions to the MWC.  While Kansas does not have great mountains, the programs are in the same general geographic area.  The MWC is a few short of the 12 needed for a conference title game, so the Ks would help there too.  And while the MWC may not have the same TV revenue, the non-UT members of the Big 12-2 are not going to get much TV revenue anyway.
