Stanford #7 with AP, #8 in Coaches - Farm93 - 11-14-2010

Since the computer formulas must ignore margin of victory, I suspect Stanford will remain at #6 in the BCS.

Does anyone know when Stanford was last in that 6/7/8 range in the rankings going into Big Game?

C.a.l plays like a top 5 team at home, so it could be one of the higher quality games of the week.

Moved ahead of Nebraska in the Coaches poll, if just barely...1066 to 1061 total points. With LSU\'s SOS taking a hit by playing some directional school......yeah still unlikely we\'d jump em, but maybe.

There\'s a pretty big gap between us and LSU: like .7 or so. The gap between Wisconsin and us is very small--like .1--so if the Harris poll gets antsy, we might get passed. (The computers will like our win over ASU much more than Wisconsin\'s win over Indiana).

The Big Ten teams near Stanford all play better quality teams down the stretch.  And each of the three is very motivated to look good for Rose Bowl, BCS at-large reasons.  So I suspect that even if Stanford finished 11-1, one of them will pass Stanford.

Back to Big Game..The Vegasinsider opening line is 8 points.  That feels like a lot after what happened yesterday.

...not really, we\'ll have a good SOS remaining. Cal is ranked #28 according to Sagarin; Oregon State is ranked #34.

Wisconsin\'s opponents: Michigan (#35), Northwestern (#49)
Michigan State\'s opponents: Purdue (#80), Penn State (#39)
Ohio State: Iowa (#22), Michigan (#35).

Sagarin predictor, elochess, or combined though?

# 2 on Sagarin.

Re: Stanford #7 with AP, #8 in Coaches - Farm93 - 11-14-2010

Stanford is #3 in Elo-Chess.

The computer rankings are key for any Stanford automatic BCS invite.  I believe both SEC teams ahead of Stanford will lose at least once, so that could enable Stanford to move in at #4 in the BCS with the help of a #2 or #3 averagae computer ranking.  Of course, 11-1 is essential so Big Game is, well, big.

However, Wisconsin is super close.  Their games have a higher profile and a similar computer ranking.  Ignore Sagarin for the moment, since that formula is more pro-Pac-10 than the others.  If Stanford is "only" #5 in the BCS and the best non-AQ is #3, then it will be Alamo for the team.  Not only will Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State have a higher profile BCS race, they also will play nationally televised games in front of 80,000+.

Stanford finishes 9-3 - Alamo
Stanford finishes 10-2 - Alamo
Stanford finishes 11-1 - Alamo, Orange, Sugar or Rose
Stanford finishes 11-1 & many other top BCS teams fall - BCS (maybe)

Here\'s a link to the USA TODAY Sagarin page for all of you ratings wonks.  Through Nov 13 Stanford is 3rd in Elo-Chess, 2nd in Predictor and 2nd Combined or Overall.
