STOP RUNNING. IT\'S NOT WORKING.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -

It\'s not like we have the best quarterback in the country or anything. (Also: YPA 8.8; ypc .8. HMMM??)
Harbaugh sure does get stubborn sometimes.

Quote:STOP RUNNING. IT\'S NOT WORKING.
In case you had not noticed, Luck is not exactly getting a ton of time. Â If they stop running the DL will really tee off on Luck.
The run game is why JH has done so well as a coach. Â He wouldn\'t be much of a coach if he just gave the run up after a few stops. Â Keep pounding. Â Their DL will get tired..hopefully.
BTW - Oregon\'s situation at C.al is remarkably similar to Stanford\'s. Â C.a.l is playing tough and giving the Ducks a lot to handle. Â Oregon is not moving the ball much, and with 10 seconds left in the half the Oregon place kicker missed only his second FG of the season. Â The miss? Â A FG attempt that appeared to go right over the upright.
So Oregon only scored 1 TD. Â I would be thrilled about that game. Â Except Stanford is not exactly on cruise control, and Stanford has to go to C.a.l next week.

Luck isn\'t getting a lot of time...to complete 8.8 yards/attempt. If you take out the Baldwin bomb, it\'s 7 yards/attempt. Throwing is a far better option than running at this point, particularly since Luck\'s passing statistics have been compiled against unfavorable downs and distances: it\'s pretty often 2nd and 10, 2nd and 9, 3rd and 7 kind of a deal.
We have the best quarterback in the country; he\'s playing well against a good defense. We should let him win the game.

The linebackers are playing close and flying up to stop the run. Â I think we should keep running play-action and dropping passes over the linebackers until they have to drop back. Â That will open up the running lanes. Â But, we do have to keep running some of the time so that it is not so predictable. Â This will be a tough game to win. Â We need some good coaching at the half here.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
Farm93 - 11-13-2010
Luck has been sacked twice. Â He turned the ball over on one of them. Â His big gain was on a pass while he was falling to his knees. Â It is not as if he is sitting back there all nice and safe.
It was a tough half, but no reason to toss the plan the team has spent a season mastering because of 5-7 great DL tackles, especially since the game is 7-7.
It will all come together in the second half. Â Keep the faith, and the balance.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
washingtonismoney - 11-13-2010
by the way, here are the first down plays divided by type in temporal order, for yards gained:
Rushing: -1, -1, 3, 5, 4, 4, 0, 0, 0, -1, 1
Passing: 11, 9, 10, 18, 13. (no incompletions).
Again, looks to me like we ought to be throwing the ball more often on first down. This is eerily reminiscent of the Cal game last year, in which Harbaugh stubbornly decided to run all the time on first down despite repeatedly getting stuffed (which would set the offense on its back heel). This time he doesn\'t have the excuse that Toby\'s really awesome.
Late note: the point of having balance is that you can hurt opponents either way. Since one option is very clearly working much better than the other, we ought to opt to it. Both of the sacks that you cite, Farm93, happened in 3rd down and medium situations, situations that came about precisely because Harbaugh has decided to waste his best asset so he can play his way.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
washingtonismoney - 11-13-2010
This drive is another point for my argument.
Luck throws on first down, what happens? 13 yards to Doug Baldwin.
Taylor rushes on the second first down despite
nine men in the box, what happens? Stuffed for no gain.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -

Because I\'m monomaniacal on this subject: the only run on first down this drive was a Wildcat play to Loukas. Otherwise it was all passes---and, lo and behold, it\'s a successful drive! Would\'ve been a touchdown if Luck and Whalen were a bit more in sync too.
Luck still doesn\'t have an incompletion when throwing on first down. Throw, Harbaugh, throw!

ASU is falling apart physically. Â Keep the faith.
ASU has found a way to lose all year. Â They are good, but they make 4th quarter mistakes. Â Would love for it to not be close, but ASU has talent.
FWIW they are quick on D, so without Owusu covering Stanford is probably easy for them.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
fullmetal - 11-13-2010
DO NOT RUN ON 3rd AND 1.
Duh Harbaugh. Â Try play-action.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
washingtonismoney - 11-13-2010
Covering Stanford is
so easy for ASU that Luck has 7.5 yards/attempt; Luck still doesn\'t have an incompletion yet on first down. Come on, be serious.
BTW whoever was calling for Anthony Wilkerson was absolutely correct: he\'s running far better than Stepfan Taylor.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
fullmetal - 11-13-2010
2nd-and-11, Taylor runs for 12. Â And he picks up another 9 or 10 on the next play. Â Maybe it\'s time.

Happy now! Â I think an INT is a completion that counts as an incompletion. Â And that was on 1st down. Â Just pound the rock Big Ten style.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
fullmetal - 11-13-2010
I missed the reason why Owusu isn\'t playing--that\'s figuring largely into this game plan and why ASU is having a good day against Stanford.
Short passes for 5 yards. Â I\'ll take it.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
fullmetal - 11-13-2010
Phantom defensive holding call nets Stanford a first down. Â Embarassed, but I\'ll take it. Â It\'ll be third and 1 after two decent Wilkerson runs. Â Danger Jim Harbaugh, danger.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
fullmetal - 11-13-2010
Playaction! Â Reuland reception for 6-7 yards! Â Luck floated that one as he was under pressure, but they executed.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
Farm93 - 11-13-2010
Ugh! Â Luck almost had ANOTHER INT on 1st down.
ASU really has everything covered. Â Pass and run.
This is why they have been in so many games. Â I am just waiting for that typical ASU meltdown.
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -
Farm93 - 11-13-2010
Ahhh...
Here comes the meltdown. Â PLEASE!!!
Re: Note to Harbaugh: -

Run the Rock!!! Â Yes!
2 TDs for Owen.
"Every week is the same exact thing for this team"
I hope that quote turns true tonight.
