Note on Moose Martin (49ers) - fullmetal - 08-04-2014

Quote:--Defensive lineman Tony Jerod-Eddie knocked tackle Jonathan Martin on his backside during a pass-rush drill. Jerod-Eddie again beat Martin a short time later.

Not a good sign there...

I have been following Martin in camp and so far, he has been beaten badly a few times-notably being pancaked by after a bull rush by British Football neophyte (and genetic freak) Lawrence Okoye.

Sucks that Richie Incognito might be "right" - Redrum - 08-04-2014

Not in the abuse.  But in much of nature and in mankind's history,  the strong, the bullies  have an instinct for singling the weak out of the herd or pack.  It's an assumption that the culture on the 49ers is fundamentally different and healthier than the Dolphins,  but if it is and Martin washes out,  Incognito gets a bit of a rehabilitation.  Not that he deserves it.  He still has the mentality of a jackal
but his suspension is over and he's a free agent.  But the NFL is the NFL and some team might think it needs a bully on its OL.  So Richie might be the last man standing.  That's validation in some people's eyes, including his own.

There are plenty of very good football players who aren't "jackals" or sociopaths.  And there are plenty of guys who get drafted relatively high who just don't pan out as good enough to be NFL players.

Jonathan Martin may have lost his confidence, but he also may not be physically good enough to be an NFL player, no matter had he known Incognito or anyone like him or not.

Agree - Redrum - 08-04-2014

But enough people around the NFL organization(s), NFL fandom and Incognito think differently than we here on the Cardboard who are sensible, sane and grounded.  Sucks.  I simply noted the suckage.

My feeling is Jonathan begin his NFL career with a bad break when he was signed with the Fish in 2012.  Even though he was ranked third at his position that year, the transition to the NFL is incredibly difficult (abuse notwithstanding) - some players would be better server staying for their Senior year and I believe Jonathan was one of those.

The 49ers are a different beast though-a well run team with a tight locker room filled with successful professionals.  If JMart can do well, it will be here.  And if it doesn't work out for him in the NFL, he will always have that beautiful mind and potent Stanford education to make the good mark in the world.

Martin looked pretty solid today against the Broncos.  The game was a dud from the offensive side but I was impressed-he is definitely making strides.

Thanks for the update!  I'm finding it hard to keep up with preseason games right now.  Heard Skov and Thomas also had good games?

Re: Note on Moose Martin (49ers) - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2014

Thomas made several nice plays against Denver and was clearly better than last week.  He's really competing hard it seems.

Depth chart for OLB:  A. Smith, A. Brooks, C. Lemonier, D. Skuta, A. Lynch, C. Thomas

I don't think Niners keep more than four OLBs, and if they keep five, it would be between Lynch and Thomas.  Given Lynch's size, youth, and potential, it looks bleak for Thomas making team.

Skov didn't do anything terrible, but not anything to stand out either.  He's not even playing much on special teams, which I believe Thomas has done.

Depth Chart for ILB:  Willis, Wilhoite, Borland, Moody, Skov

Top three are locks, so it's between Moody and Skov for the last spot until Bowman returns.  Moody hasn't done anything impressive, but he's still getting more reps.  My guess is Skov gets signed to practice squad.

Skov made a tackle on punt coverage late in the game
