Marty, lots of good stuff by Lombardi. I find it on Team Stream by Bleacher Report on the iPad app.

Among the freshmen, McCaffrey is the ace, with major praise for QB Keler Chryst ("almost Luckian"), OT Casey Tucker (could be in the Jumbo soon), CB/PR Terrence Alexander ("as advertised and ahead of the curve"), and DE Solomon Thomas, who could work into the two-deep.Â
CB Alameen Murphy, my favorite among the three stars, also looks excellent but there are only so many spots in a two deep/nickel,
LB Joey Alfieiri also has matched his clippings.Â
Possible breakouts this fall: Aziz Shittu, Zach Hoffpair, Devon Cajuste, Kyle Murphy, Austin Hooper, Kevin Palma.
Montgomery is even bigger and faster. Lordie.
Arrows up. Bet big against the current wins over/under.

Here's a good free article:
https://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1670361
Quote:...
Shaw listed David Parry, Henry Anderson, A.J. Tarpley and Kodi Whitfield as players that impressed during Thursday's practice.
Another camp standout has been junior defensive end Aziz Shittu, who returned to practice on Thursday after being held out earlier in the week due to an unspecified minor injury. Shittu was one of the breakout players of Stanford's spring ball, and has maintained a high level of play throughout camp.
...
On Thursday, Shaw added another name to the list.
"Casey Tucker, (I'm) really excited where Casey is also as a true freshman," Shaw said. "We'll see how early he's ready to play, but he looks like he's going to be ready to play this year."
Tucker is one of four linemen who will contend for roles in Stanford's various packages that use extra offensive linemen. Brendon Austin, David Bright and Nick Davidson are the others.
"David Bright has had a really, really good camp," Shaw said. "(We're) really excited about where he is."
"Nick Davidson has had a good camp. So we have I think four legitimate candidates right now to come in and play those positions."
...

It's great to hear how well Cryst is doing. What if he is another Cam Newton/J. Winston and sits on the bench as a redshirt when he could be leading the Cardinal to a NC and winning the Voldemort? I guess he'll have to do that next season. I can wait.

By default, I have to remind everyone. True freshman quarterbacks nearly always stink:

Put it this way: Hogan's worst NCAA passer rating is better than every single true freshman QB's since 2008.

I wouldn't include Cajuste as a breakout candidate. He was pretty damn good last season.

Thanks for posting that article. I now feel much better about Cryst sitting this season.

Cam was a junior or something. At least one year at Fl (behind Tebow), then a year in juco, then a year at Auburn. That's how he went into the draft after winning the Voldemort/BCSCG.

Big scrimmage tomorrow. Let's pray for it to be injury free.

Haven't read anything suggesting Carter will miss any games, but even of he does, Stanford appears to have quality depth in the secondary that will mitigate such a reality. Only a couple of seasons ago, if a starting Stanford CB was going to be out, it would be like losing a limb. Now, it's just a minor flesh wound.

That's no longer true, though still essentially correct.
Last year true frosh PJ Walker of Temple had a season long QB rating of 150.82. While this was immediately behind Hogan's 151.64 (they ranked 20th and 21st in the country), it was better than Hogan's 2012 season rating of 147.9.
I guess there is a technicality that could still make your statement true. Hogan didn't play enough to qualify for the official rankings (you must play in 75% of your teams games and average at least 15 pass attempts per game played). Thus his only "counting" PER was also his worst at 151.64.
But Hogan's PERs have been very good. That article doesn't quite say true frosh QBs never prosper, but rather that only the absolute stars seem to come through the experience well (Terrelle Pryor, Robert Griffin III, etc).

No team has more than 2-3 CB who have logged significant playing time. Stanford has Lyons, Carter, and Harris who have all played a lot of football and all play corner. Harris would step up as a starter and the impact would be minimal, IMO. Behind the top three are four guys...
Pippens is in his third year in the program, and is a big, physical player. He would become the third CB at least initially.
Then there are two super talented Frosh in Alexander and Murphy, both of whom could see PT as Frosh even if Carter never has to miss time due to injury. Would they make mistakes? Sure, but really good players learn quickly and it seems these guys are both in that category.
After that it's Taijuan Thomas, who I'm guessing a few years ago, might have been Stanford's best available CB, as he has an athletic profile Stanford rarely has had so deep on the depth chart. Plus, he has a redshirt year under him.
On top of all this, Akina has said Jordan Richards can play nickel, which further lessens the pressure on a potential Carter loss.
Relative to its history, other positions on the team, and most college programs, Stanford is equipped to absorb Alex Carter's loss.

The most interesting thing in that report for me was Lomardi's speculation about Fanaika possibly being moved to NT. Many of us have speculated about that possibility. It seems the Nwafor retirement very well could precipitate such a move.
Last year Dallas Lloyd saw the Safety need and decided that it was in the best interest of the team, for him to switch, so he approached Shaw with the idea. Perhaps Fanaika will see the gaping whole at NT and similarly volunteer to change positions to help the team?

Unfortunately Lombardi's observation was prefaced with the statemen: "this is pure speculation at this point," which I read as "This is purely my, Dave Lombardi's opinion..." Maybe it means nothing more than Lombardi has been reading the same boards and now he's putting it out there in his column. I wont get too excited until someone notes Fanaika is practicing with the defensive unit, or a coach (or Fanaika himself) says something.

Fanaika is listed at 321 pounds and is "only" 6'3", so his center of gravity is lower than say 6'6" Austin at OG. His girth would be useful at NT if he can get fire off quickly on defense.Â

I would put money on Alex Carter's being on the field for the first defensive snap against UCDavis.
