A nice article (with accompanying Stanford plug) on Lester Archambeau -

Lester Archambeau was a 4 year starter on the Stanford defensive line in the late 1980s. After Stanford, he had a successful career in the NFL with Green Bay and Atlanta. He now works for the NFL Players Association which has published a nice interview. He talks about his time at Stanford among other topics.Â

Archambeau was two or three years ahead of me at Stanford, and I interacted with him several times. Back in those days, the team "training table" was rather inglorious -- the Wilbur dining hall. I worked as a hasher, and two or three nights a week I was assigned to work the training table. (Other students (Okada, I think) could only get one serving of an entree per trip through the line, but football players could get as much as they wanted; that was the only difference.) Anyway, it wasn't a good line to work. Once a week, instead of serving, I was the late busser, which meant that I had to clean the dining hall and mop the floors once everyone was done eating. The football players were notorious for staying late, which wasn't a surprise since it was probably their first chance to sit down since lunch. Every single week I'd have to work around them -- wiping down the other tables, mopping the other side of the cafeteria -- until all the tables were clean except for the one at which four or five players were lingering. I'd have to walk over and take their trays so that the dishwashers could finish and go home, then eventually I'd have to ask them to leave. I was 17, I weighed about 160 pounds, and I dreaded this. Those players weren't bullies, but they weren't nice, either.
Lester Archambeau, however, stood out. He was incredibly polite, always said please and thank you when he went through the food line, and he struck me as different from the rest. He was definitely one of my favorite players.
PS -- I know this reads as a broad generalization, but it's really only about my experience with five or six freshmen football players.

Lester was a year behind me, and I had several classes with him. Not only very nice, but incredibly BRIGHT! And of course I loved him leveling Washington's quarterback (chandler?) I think in the fall of 87.Â
