I'm really curious to see what UCLA does. That ranking seems so optimistic to me, but everyone is that bullish on them. Hundley can't carry the team alone...

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - Trevmiesterj - 08-17-2014

After following Chris Petersen at BSU, I think that Washington may be the most intriguing team in the North division.  Will we see the sprinkling of trick plays and gadgets that made BSU so unpredictable or will Peterson pare down the playbook like he did in his last year at Boise State because it was becoming too complex for younger players to readily grasp?

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - indiancardinal - 08-18-2014

Loved this little blurb about Stanford from ESPNs Chris Low while discussing the ESPN Top 10 ..."When are we ever going to learn?..."

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11366575/florida-state-seminoles-no-1-associated-press-preseason-college-football-poll

Stanford mention at the end about 40 seconds into the video.

Always better to be under the radar in the pre season rankings  ;D

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - fullmetal - 08-18-2014

Good to be under the radar and play with a chip on the shoulder, but when it comes to end-of-season shenanigans regarding early/late losses and who deserves to be in the NCG, being seeded higher early on gives you that extra rankings edge that you just might need to end up on top.

We have no idea if that will continue to be meaningful.

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - indiancardinal - 08-18-2014

I guess no matter where you are ranked at the beginning of the  season, the key to being in the top rung at the end of season is the timing and "perceived quality" of your loss /es

Lose early and hope the team that beat you has a great season. ;D

So in that sense we are set up favorably ... ie IF the good guys can navigate this schedule with just a single loss. The first half of our schedule being the tougher half, well, relatively speaking with 3 of our ranked opponent bunched together. Our guys will already be into the Notre Dame game - 5 games into the season - before classes really kick in. I know everyone is talking about how brutal this schedule is with so many tough games.

Our byes could have been placed better but they are where they are... essentially breaking our season into 3 mini seasons

Aug 30 - Sep 13    3 games  (all home games)
Sep 27 - Nov 1      6 games  (2 home, 4 away) BRUTAL BRUTAL
Nov 15 - Nov 28    3 games  (1 home, 2 away including Big Game at Berkeley)

It will really help not having to travel for the PAC 12 championship game  ;D

It is the pre season and I love the fact that our program is where it is at and I can actually fantasize about an undefeated season. The statisticians will tell me there is actually a 1% chance of it happening. I say Hell yeah!! I am a Cardinal fan with Cardinal glasses and bleeding Cardinal.

12 - 0 and then 3 - 0 !!!!
Go STANFORD!

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2014

In the poll voter-dominated BCS system, an early loss and who you lost to was meaningful.  We have no evidence to suggest the committee will be at all influenced by these factors.  It may very well be that a 11-0 Stanford team that loses at UCLA and then beats them the following week n the P12CG, wins over the committee, even if UCLA is ranked higher when Stanford loses.

The committee has stated it will give deference to conference champions, IIRC, and just because say Ohio State lost a game in September and goes on a winning streak, it doesn't follow that they have a better resume than what would be a 12-1 Stanford team, for example.

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - pcgoode - 08-18-2014

Given the teams noted below, I'd be interested in hearing who others think will surprise the most on the upside and who will disappoint given the initial AP Poll.

FWIW, here is my take.

Surprise on the Upside

Stanford (I'm biased I know, but I think the media types consistently discount too much the idea that we have a program now as opposed to our historical peaks and valleys).
USC (Great starting 22.  Kessler is a good QB, and if they can stay relatively healthy, could see them beating out UCLA for PAC 12 South Title).
Washington (Peterson is the real deal.  I think they have more talent than people think).

Disappoint

Oregon (Mariota is 0-2 against us, they will have their hands full vs Michigan State, and their D is suspect.  Could see them losing against one of UCLA, Arizona, Washington or Oregon State).
ND (Suspect on D, especially if/when they lose the four players currently suspended.  Not clear to me they will be much of a threat to throw the ball).
ASU (Too many losses on D, without any obvious answers.  I am also not as impressed as others are with Kelly as QB).
UCLA (I think their D is way overrated.  I've seen some pretty good football from Hundley, but not sure if I think he is all everyone makes him out to be.  Running game?).

If you're a fan of any school's football team and don't know that feeling, even if you don't say it out loud, you're not a fan.  Hell yes!

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - washingtonismoney - 08-19-2014

ESPN Insider has an interesting one re: UCLA:
Quote:The Bruins are the most polarizing among the people I talk with. I had one coach tell me Monday that he didn’t think they would win more than eight games. He said UCLA has already become too “image-conscious,” buying into the prima donna hype before it even arrived. QB Brett Hundley might be most guilty, he said. (Oops. I picked the Bruins as a playoff team. Maybe I need a redo?)

Re: Preseason AP Poll: Stanford #11 - pcgoode - 08-19-2014

Thanks WIM.  The Bruins schedule also seems quite tough, particularly at the end of the year - at Washington, bye week, then hosting the USC and Stanford.  Coming out of that part of their schedule with two wins would be an accomplishment.  They also visit Texas and Arizona State, and host Oregon.  Again, two wins in this stretch would be an accomplishment.  Throw in one mulligan with games with Arizona and Utah, and I can see how an 8-4 regular season is entirely possible.
