kal poaches successful Stanford coach -

Some of you may have known that Texas hired away a very, very successful kal's women's rowing coach during this offseason. Well, kal has just announced its hire to fill that head coaching position, and their new head coach is Al Acosta, formerly Stanford's lightweight women's rowing head coach. Acosta is a kal rowing alum and has spent pretty much his entire rowing career in the Bay Area. He is a natural fit, and has found recent success with several national championships in the collegiate lightweight women's rowing scene. I have heard mixed opinions on Acosta's coaching, but I cannot confirm or deny such opinions other than pointing to the existence of those multiple national championships in the last five years.
Stanford gets to fill a head coaching position with most schools starting the academic calendar in about one week...not an enviable position. kal, on the other hand, should continue its success in NCAA women's rowing with Acosta at the helm.

The kal job was a no-brainer. It's one of the premier NCAA programs in the US, attracts top talent, and has world-class facilities. Women's lightweight rowing is not an NCAA sport, and it's a very small competitive field. It's similarly not well represented at the Olympic level.
