Hogan, Ward, Tarpley and Richards named team captains today.

I have no objections, of course, but, at first glance I would have expected Montgomery instead of Ward. Just because, well, Montgomery is the most decorated senior on the offense.

It might be because Ty doesn't see himself as a leader or take on leadership roles. He does seem like a pretty soft-spoken guy. David Shaw is correct. Let the players pick the guys they believe to be leaders as their captains.Â
It's always nice to have the leaders be the best players so they can have the most impact. Tarpley, Hogan, and Richards fit that bill. If Ward isn't exactly the guy who can put the team on his shoulders to make game changing plays, it's not that big of a deal given the other three guys are such guys.

I personally like the idea of having a team captain who isn't a "star player." It speaks to the values of the team that they recognize leadership doesn't come from gaudy statistics. Of course, you want the players identified as leaders to be ones who are also on the field as much as possible to make sure that leadership is useful in game, but Hogan is out their every offensive snap and I would bet that Ward will see significant action as well.

Ward is in many ways a terrific pick as captain. He won't get the headlines that others will because he plays FB. But his blocking is superb - powerful, aggressive and technically sound. Almost makes up for not having a lineman as captain!

Here's one of Lee Ward's great lead blocks last season, knocking back an ASU linebacker...

Team captains are voted on by the team...Montgomery isn't that soft-spoken. He might have a little too much swagger at times.
