Ty v. Cajuste -

From Rotoworld:
"NFL.com's Gil Brandt believes Stanford redshirt junior WR Devon Cajuste could be more special than teammate Ty Montgomery.
Montgomery has earned plenty of buzz thanks to his exceptional straight-line speed, but we think Montgomery does not show that same speed during non-vertical routes and does not consistently win in contested situations. Cajuste is a much bigger frame and has previously been used in the same capacity as receiving tight ends."
Would certainly not disagree with this statement, especially considering Shaw's claims that Cajuste can run in the 4.4s. Ty has exceptional straight line speed, but has shown suspect hands at times of the years. Cajuste seems like an excellent route runner, has outstanding size for a WR and has surer hands.

I question those reports of Cajuste's straight-line speed, because it doesn't seem like he pulls away from the DBs in the open field.
He's a really good athlete as a size/speed combination, I just don't think he's quite as fast as these reports make him out to be.

Nice problem to have, especially when Rector is thrown into the mix. It would be interesting to see where the fastest players on the teams of 10-15 years ago would rank on the current roster. I never thought I would see a Stanford roster with the overall team speed that we have!

I don't know about speed, but Troy Walters (Balitnikof winner) would do just fine on the current roster, I suspect.

We've had speed burners before but I doubt we ever had this many at one time.

Was Walters that fast? I always thought of him as more of a Jerry Rice type. Could be wrong though.

Montgomery is very good, but were I in a crucial situation and needed a touch catch, I'm running a play for Cajuste. Better hands and more reliable, plain and simple.

According to this link, Troy was 10th for all times in the 20 yard shuttle from 2000-2011. I couldn't find his time in the 40, but I suspect he was fast enough. Interesting, Coy Wire and Randy Fasani were also on that list, so perhaps the 20 yard shuttle is a Stanford specialty from that ear?

Not sure I'd classify either as hugely reliable. Cajuste has dropped a few -- including, IIRC, a couple big potential plays against MSU. (Drops were a pretty big deal throughout that game -- Cajuste dropped a couple, Rector dropped one that turned into a pick, and Whitfield dropped a five-yard gain on 3rd-and-3.)

I've never actually thought of Montgomery as a true burner. Sure he's fast, but his greatest asset (and why he's so dangerous on KR and in the open field) is his lateral quickness and acceleration. If anything I see Cajuste as someone who's very fast in a straight line, but without Ty's quickness.
