In light of the Rodgers injury, it looks like Sark may start 2 true freshmen at OL (Lobendahn and Mama) plus a redshirt freshman (Banner)? For all those who are saying that Stanford needs time for its OL to gel, the Toejams seem to have a similarly precarious situation.Â
Re: Toejams -

With each passing week, they become more banged up.
Playing true freshman in main spots on the offensive line
every down is an act of desperation.
Re: Toejams -

The projected right side of the line (Mama and Banner) weighs about 725 pounds. Stanford could use Trent Murphy's experience with wrestling against farm animals.Â
Re: Toejams -

I'm a little curious about Sark's insistence on an up-tempo style given the inexperience of his O-line. It will be interesting to see how they perform against Fresno State.

If this is true, you're taking a 5th year Senior all-conference DE in Henry Anderson, and pitting him against a True Frosh who is probably carrying bad weight, otherwise not strong as would be ideal, and doesn't have proper technique. They also must contend with another Senior in James Vaughters or RS Junior in Kevin Anderson who is no slouch himself. It's not a good matchup for USC at all if they start two True Frosh on the right side of the OL. Then again, it might not be even if they started whoever they would have preferred starting!

Perhaps Cyrus Hobbi could offer some insights to Mama and Banner re: what to expect versus Stanford?
Re: Toejams -

I don't necessarily think the up-tempo hurts this particular o-line because of inexperience; in fact, most uptempo offenses have fewer protections, which should be easier to learn. (With a corresponding sacrifice for variety. Guess we'll see some exotic blitzes.*)
I do, however, think it hurts this particular o-line because Damien Mama is, shall we say, a bit larger than advisable:
Quote:Damien Mama looks like he will start the season opener and also said he weighs 377 pounds, down from 397 in the summer.
(

* (why is it blitzes are exotic? You rarely hear about regular blitzes. Also, the only thing that seems to be exotic these days are blitzes.)

I hope you're right and that he isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread.
"One thing that did catch our eye in terms of execution was that USC worked heavily behind Damien Mama as a pulling guard to create large holes to the left side, the preferred half of the field to attack opposing defenses."
If nothing else he may block out the sun.

Two freshmen and a redshirt freshman starting on the OL for Trojans? This will be even more fun than the 2012 game!

What were folks saying about wanting to play $C later in the season? Shooooot. Gotta teach those frosh how it's done in the Pac-12. (Assuming they're not redshirt frosh.)Â

I hate it when Stanford fans get cocky. Not only does it make slip ups worse but sounds a bit too much like DAT to me.
Re: Toejams -

I do not see cockiness as much as seeing the anticipation of introducing these young linemen to Henry Anderson, David Parry, Blake Lueders and seeing their heads spin when we blitz our ILBs. I wouldn't be surprised if they utilize the quick pass to counter the pass rush and attempt to exhaust the front seven.
One more week until the beginning of the season! I have a feeling this week will move slowly.
Re: Toejams -

Bang on PrinceLightfoot. It is one thing to anticipate a blitzfest, sackfest and TFLfest vs an inexperienced set of linemen, and quite another for DAT to say the Ducks would score 40 against our D last year. No comparison.

Well...see that play-option pass article I linked in the other thread =\ That kind of weapon could be deadly for Oregon to use against us--with Kessler at the helm for the Fightin' Condoms, it's still worrisome given their competence at running the ball and reciever talent. (Someone keep track of Nelson Agholor, please...)

One note about Mama. When the team took its individual photos earlier this summer, each player was supposed to wear a supplied team blazer. They didn't have one big enough for Mama. He had to pose with the blazer over his shoulders, godfather style. This is a large human being.

I seem to recall a story from a high school football-crazed state -- maybe Texas -- in which the frustrated coach of a mediocre team replaced his players with young men in their early 20s in a game against a top-flight competitor. At the end of the first quarter, his replacement team was ahead 21-0. His "team" lost the game 61-21 because, you know, high school football players are in pretty good shape.
Maybe it's the same here with near-400 pound OLs. Push us around in Q1, then Stanford does the pushing.

Well, it is official. U$C is starting true freshmen at both guard positions and one wide receiver slot.

I am a little confused. Are you saying that we should worry about Kessler on a read-option (of any sort)?
Kessler has run for a career total of -142 yards, i.e. his runs are basically all sacks.

And passing out of an option look isn't new, though isn't utilized a lot because it is difficult to do accurately.
[Throwing the ball after crossing the line of scrimmage is the new wrinkle I saw on the play in the video. (emoticon)]
