OT: How smart are the Cardinal? - Spartandawg - 08-22-2014
A father and his boy are driving down 127 from East Lansing to Jackson to take a tour of the maximum facility prison when they get into a horrible car wreck. They are quickly airlifted to Grand Rapids Spectrum Hospital where, unfortunately, both are pronounced DOA. Moments later, one of the doctors sees the dead boy and shrieks, "Oh my God, that's my son!"Â
How is this possible? ???

The doctor is the boy's mother.

Really? That was an IQ test? Seems more like a test of societal awareness.

Seems more like a test of having heard a 3-grade "riddle" before. I mean, you may as well ask the one about the rooster laying an egg on the top of a south-facing house.

That's easy to say after alum81 already provided the answer.

Did you really think that spoiled it for anyone? ::)

Why does the riddle have to be so sad?

This riddle is often used to demonstrate gender bias and has been around since the 70s. There's even been academic studies on the outcome answers parsed by age, sex, social background etc of respondents.

While that may have been the correct answer back in the 70s, today the politically correct answer would be that the doctor could have been the boy's mother or the father's husband.

I asked my hyperfeminist mother (she was one of the first 100 subscribers to Ms. magazine) that riddle in 1975. She didn't get it.

I heard Will Rogers tell it.

I thought the riddle was going to be something about defining a "maximum facility" prison.
I'm stumped.

At this point (this point being the past 20 years - or apparently 40+ years) is it possible anyone in these studies gave a wrong answer for any reason other than wanting to mess with the studiers?

I'll be happy to be hear CI, Garvin, Nan3cy and Redrum's first hand account on pre Civil War feminist humor when they toddle over on their walkers. I'll meet them halfway on my three wheel scooter.
While I'm awaiting my "edjacashun", here's one lightweight article discussing research centered on the riddle.

You mean Columbus didn't kick an Indian for telling it?

Given MSU's schedule, shouldn't Spartandawg be asking how smart the Ducks are? On an Oregon discussion board?
