Why is Cal called Cal? - CornFed - 08-23-2014

Since there are several UC campuses, why did Berkeley get labeled as "Cal" and the others did not?  A colleague at work who didn't go there (or Stanford) just asked the question and I had never thought about it and couldn't answer his question.  I will start my Google search now, but I'm not optimistic.  Any help or insight y'all might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

It was the first UC and thus claimed "Ca.l". There are other UTs but Austin claimed Texas, other UMs but Ann Arbor claimed Michigan.  Same thing.

Low APR U currently ranks at the BOTTOM of graduation rates for all division 1 football and it's numbers for men's basketball are close to rock-bottom.

For a school that is regularly considered among the top public universities in the world, this is an embarrassment - especially when you take into account the mediocre to bad records of those teams over the same timeframe.

You will notice C.al's football and basketball teams at the bottom of the Bootleg's graduation rate analysis in just about every category.

I think the filter is making it hard to understand the actual question being asked.

Yep. Leftcoast answered the actual question.

Maybe it's time to rotate out the replacement for Kal. How about something traditional, like Weenies?

I got distracted for the rest of the day today and just got in.  I had totally forgotten about the auto-correct and it is true that my question was muddled by it.  LeftCoast got it right, insofar as his response offers an explanation which is consistent with the question I was trying to ask.  Thank you one and all for the input.

What I found on Google seems to reinforce the answer Left Coast provided.

That was a funny video, though. I decided the animal was making doglike sounds so probably was not a cat or a rabbit. Though guinea pig came to mind later.  ;)

Re: Why is Low APR U called Low APR U? - Papa John - 08-25-2014

My understanding is that UCLA was originally called "University of California, Southern Branch." During a Westwood campus tour, the tour guide gave an accounting of U$C students--or was it C.al students?--disparagingly referring to what-is-now-called-UCLA as the "twig." That story may be apocryphal, but I thought it was pretty funny when I heard it.

I went to grad school at UCLA and now work at UC-Santa Barbara, and, in my experience, the "University of California" and "C.al" are the most common terms for the Berkeley campus. "U.C.-Berkeley" is used, but less frequently. I've also heard the term "Berkeley," which is understood to refer to the east bay city/campus and not the music school in Boston (which is spelled differently).

The two-letter "U.C." is never used to denote the Berkeley campus. "U.C." is used to denote the 10-campus institution known as the UC system. The UC system has a President (Janet Napolitano), and each campus has its own Chancellor.

Well, that's the way the name game works in my world, but I don't really sweat these details. 71Bear or someone else should, of course, feel free to correct any of the above.

Before I go, I'd like to confuse matters even more...
The URL www.berkeley.edu will take you to the home page of the Berkeley campus, www.california.edu will take you nowhere, and www.universityofcalifornia.edu will take you to the home page of the UC System.

Give me www.stanford.edu any day!
