A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - washingtonismoney - 08-25-2014

DB (and captain) Josh Shaw leapt off a second floor balcony to save his nephew, who was apparently drowning in a pool. Two high ankle sprains for Shaw.

Hate to hear this, even about a Tro.jan.  If accurate, the guy did the right thing.  If he leaped into pool it must have been shallow.

Wow. What an extraordinary young man. Hope he has a quick and full recovery.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - GoodGrief - 08-25-2014

Maybe "noble" would have been a better adjective than "sad." Upon reading the headline, I was afraid somebody died. And then upon reading that he jumped from a balcony, I was really afraid somebody died.

Really too bad about his injury. I hope he heals quickly and fully.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - fullmetal - 08-25-2014

Admirable bravery, hope the nephew is okay.  High ankle sprains are pretty nasty, and I don't know if he'll be back in time for the Stanford game.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - TrumpCard - 08-25-2014

I agree with all the comments that this ended as well as it could end.  And I'm not too torn up about Shaw probably being unable to play against Stanford because he is $('s biggest cornerback.  We could see an $( team in week two with 4 true freshman starters, including a slightly undersized and very inexperienced Adoree Jackson lined up against Ty Montgomery or Devon Cajuste.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - stanfan95118 - 08-25-2014

Apparently Shaw jumped from a second floor balcony onto the concrete below, suffering the ankle sprains.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - stupac2 - 08-25-2014

"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

We (rightly) rag on USC a lot, but I'd take this kid on my team any day. Bravo and a speedy recovery to him.

So glad he suffered only ankle sprains. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Jumping off a second story balcony is not a trivial danger. The son of some people I know tried to jump into the pool from the balcony of his apartment and a week later he was dead. Granted, he'd had several beers when he made the attempt, but it has to be dangerous even if you're sober.

Hmmm...

This is blowing up on twitter. It was a "few" phone calls received so adding that to the first tweet.

Did his nephew go to Stanford?

I've heard rumors that the "nephew" is not an actual nephew, but just a close friend who did indeed go to Stanford, and that he and Josh Shaw met while fountain hopping during a recruiting visit in 2010.

The title for this thread is now more appropriate....disgusting if true.

If the original story turns out to be false, $outhernCal would reconfirm the legendary gullibility of their mascot.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - OutsiderFan - 08-26-2014

The nephew drowning thing didn't seem very kosher at the outset did it?  I mean the first thing I thought was "wait a minute, isn't Shaw from Florida?"  Sure he COULD have a nephew in L.A., but the odds of that seemed a little long, and the story a bit too convenient for me to not be skeptical.

This is why reading these latest reports is not the slightest bit surprising if the original story was a fabrication.  Just happy the prophylactics are electing team captains with this character, if the Shaw story is false.

Shaw is from L.A. originally. Urban outrecruited Carroll.

If this turns out to be true it is really a scandal.  If the phone calla and tweets turn out to be bogus it is disgusting.

Re: A sad today in opponent attrition: SC - Leftcoast - 08-26-2014

Athletes are notorious for coming up with false stories on how they got their injuries.

In San Francisco we remember Giants MVP Jeff Kent who broke his wrist while washing his pick-up and DEFINITELY NOT while popping wheelies on his motorcycle.  We remember Warriors guard Monte Ellis who hurt his ankle while lifting weights and DEFINITELY NOT while doing stunts on his moped.

And let's not forget this regrettable injury to Aaron Tipoti at Cal that Ca.l Coach Tosh Lupoi quickly noted from the sidelines.  Tosh noticed the injury even before Tipoti did and helpfully suggested he fall down on the football before further harming himself.  What a guy, that Lupoi.

(Oregon coaches and fans claims this is a common tactic but Tosh is the only coach to admit instructing his players to fake injuries.)
