Which freshmen will play this year? -

I'm curious to see which freshman will get some snaps in this year and which ones will be red shirted. I know Stanford tends to RS a lot of new guys, but it seems for sure that Casey Tucker will play this year, given he's on the 2 deep depth chart for our first game. It sounds like McCaffrey will also have a solid shot, along with Dalton Schultz. Does anyone else play this year?Â
I assume Chryst will RS given he's a QB and even Luck waited a year. Solomon Thomas jumps out as a guy that has the talent to play and size, but haven't heard much about his camp. Each year you get so excited about the new recruits, but then you have to wait a couple years before they really start making an impact.Â

Not sure about Schultz. Tucker and McCaffrey yes. Perhaps Thomas or Horrible Harry as our DL depth is thin. I also think one of the DBs may play, most likely either Murphy or Alexander. Our CB depth is fairly thin. If someone gets hurt, we may have a true frosh in the two deep. Marx at FB is also a possibility but I doubt it as we don't need 3 fullbacks imo.

At running back, he'd have to be No. 2 at the very least to get enough touches to make this worth burning a year of eligibility. And how good a punt returner would he have to be to make it justifiable on that basis? Especially when Shaw keeps saying he wants to use Ty Montgomery there.
It could be more about getting him experience for next year. Also, if you don't think the guy will stay for year 5 then burning the redshirt doesn't cost anything.

McCaffery as a PR and in the Kelsey Young role on sweeps.
Marx, Tucker and 2 of Alexander, Murphy or Holder.
Really hoping that Schultz doesn't burn the shirt. If he doesn't redshirt, then we will have 4 TEs who have their eligibility expire the same year which is not ideal. Also believe that while he is athletic, we should have enough between the 3 RS Fr TEs and the WRs

I've always felt this way. A lot of these guys are on four-year plans, so you might as well use them as freshmen, even if in limited roles. As for McCaffrey, Drukarev is reporting that Shaw plans on using him this fall at running back.

Don't tell me McCaffrey picked up pass-blocking at the college level that quickly... :p
