An anonymous coaches' poll for playoffs - washingtonismoney - 08-26-2014

Travis Haney polled 20 anonymous coaches as to who they expected would make the playoffs:

1. FSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Oregon (10 votes)
9. UCLA (2 votes)
13. Stanford (1 vote)

I would say by far the most overrated team here is Oklahoma. I know we've been discussing UCLA, but UCLA makes a bunch more sense than Oklahoma to me.

Well, the most overrated by the media in comparison to this coaches' poll would be UCLA, i.e. UCLA is quite often cited by the media as a playoff team but by only 10% of these coaches.

It would appear that only 13 of 20 coaches expect a Pac 12 team in the playoff. That is surprising to me. Either they don't think much of the Pac 12 or think so much of the Pac 12 that they believe the league will be cannibalizing itself.

On Oklahoma. Well, I strongly suspect 4 of the big 5 conference winners will make the playoff. Oklahoma seems like a good bet to win the Big 12 and thus have a very good shot at the playoff - particularly if the Big 12 is bad enough to not give the Sooners much competition. And I think that might be the case outside of Baylor. Oklahoma isn't losing any out of conference games (La Tech, Tulsa, Tennessee at home), so they'll have a very good record if the win the Big 12 and are a good bet for the playoff.

Seems like the coaches believe that a two loss PAC12 champion would be left out of the playoff. I do not believe that entirely. It will depend on the quality of the opponents who handed the champion the losses and the circumstances of the defeats like point margin of loss.

If I am a coach looking at a schedule with only 8 conference games, and 4 OOC home games against weak teams from the other 5, or worse FCS teams, I would not want to support the narrative that a 2-loss Pac-12 team will get into the playoffs.

I would want to reinforce the idea that 1 loss or undefeated conference champs from the Power 5 should be taken above any 2 loss team with a strong SOS.  After all, a lot of these coaches KNOW they don't have the SOS to make the playoffs as a two time loser.  So yes, Oklahoma over UCLA or Stanford.

It also does not shock me that collectively 20 coaches would predict that the Pac-12 will teams will knock each other out.  That is a narrative many need to support if they believe they have a chance to be a 1 loss conference champ and/or believe that the Pac-12 champ will have 2 losses.

The Coaches Poll was always a joke anyway.  What D1 coach looks at any team other than the next opponent?  They are a horrible source, and reports are few if any actually fill out the ballot; that falls to SIDs who only have self-interest to guide them.  This poll is no more than that.  If Shaw was a member, how much time do you think he has spent thinking about Oklahoma, Baylor, etc.?

Not really.  Oklahoma is a strong favorite to win the Big 12 and have at most one loss.  This gives them a chance to get in and who knows what will happen then.

UCLA's road to get it is MUCH tougher.  I think a Pac-12 team will get into the playoff and has a good a chance as any other team of winning, but I don't think it will be UCLA.  Nov 1 will decide which Pac 12 team gets glory's first shot.

Re: An anonymous coaches' poll for playoffs - fullmetal - 08-27-2014

Win the Pac-12...the rest will hopefully take care of itself.

Oklahoma caught lightning in the bottle when they started Trevor Knight at QB and relegated Blake Bell to the bench.  They beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, if anyone remembers that game, and that was a Nick Saban-coached team with 3 weeks of preparation losing to a program that traditional craps the bed in BCS bowls.  Unless Charlie Strong pulls a miraculous 180-degree turn in the Longhorn locomotive (or if Art Briles/Bryce Petty at Baylor steps up), OU could definitely make the playoffs.
