Aziz Shittu to miss opener - dabomb1227 - 08-27-2014

David Lombardi reports on Twitter (as to Andy Drukarev) that Shittu will miss the opener.  While this is not great, maybe it will help Luke K get some more game action as the now 4th DL and hopefully the 6th DL spot can shake itself out with Lohn and others receiving playing time

Aziz Shittu (toe) will miss Stanford's season opener against Davis. Shaw hopes he's back for USC.

Bummer for him.  Everything I've read indicated he really turned the corner in spring ball and fall camp and was beginning to realize his potential.  Hope for a very quick recovery - we are going to need EVERYONE for Sep 6.

This hurts. Depth is very thin at DL.  DL, CB and OT are the places where we can least afford injury imo.  DL and CB need to play two strings and the back half of our second string is very inexperienced on the DL and at CB.  Heaven forbid if Murphy or Peat go down with injury.  The drop-off to the second string tackle could be brobdingnagian as evidenced by a true freshman appearing in the depth chart.

Take a chill pill, man.  No college football team has great depth everywhere, and most don't have it at as many positions as Stanford.  It is probably more than likely that Shittu would play if SC was this week, but we'll find out soon enough how troublesome this toe thing is.

As for the DL in particular, it might be a blessing in disguise to have Shittu miss a game, assuming he can come back healthy next week.  Given it is such a mismatch this week, more guys should be able to play in his absence.  This could give Lohn, Yazdi, and maybe Callihan and Hayes a chance to show they can be trusted in an actual game.  It's also going to give Kaumatule more reps which seems like it would be good for him.

Some programs are more interested in the health and well-being of players than others.  It has become clear that Stanford gives the medical staff full control over when players can play, and they don't shoot them up with pain killers to get them ready before they are fully healthy.  Shaw also used the "hope" words with Carter and Montgomery, didn't he?  He even hedged his bets with Montgomery, saying "hope to have him back early in the season."  This week we learn he's full go for the first game without limitation.

Outsider-  There is big difference between OL and DL depth this year versus last year. Starters are studs both years. Last year second string were also studs. Not so this year.  Much bigger risk to injury than last year when we could withstand a Anderson or Gardner injury or Yankey bereavement leave without skipping a beat.  I think our fate this year is much more dependent on our health.
