Its going to be that sort of season -
Rally - 08-28-2014
As if we haven't had enough. Wazzu exposed, A&M destroys South Carolina . . . On day one. Oh for the good old days when you could count on US.C, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Oklahoma and Nebraska, with only Stanford joining the party. This is going to be a tumultuous season, win or lose. I hope we survive but, like last year, never say never. Hang onto your hats.

Based on the results of last nights game (35-13 loss to Ole Miss), you'd have to come to one of two conclusions.
1. The Broncos really miss Chris Petersen.
2. Petersen picked a good time to bail to go to Washington.
P.S. As far as Wazzu being exposed is concerned, did anyone think they were going to be all that good in the first place?

I see Mason did not get off to a good start last night

Boise played them really close in the fourth -- it was 7-6 at the beginning of the quarter IIRC. then it fell apart.

The most optimistic prediction I saw was them going 6-6. So no, I don't think anyone did.

I watched the fourth quarter of the WSU vs. Rutgers game last night. The way they lost was reminiscent, but did not quite reach the magnitude, of their bowl-game choke last year.
This has probably been posted elsewhere on the CARDBoard, but there's a term for such behavior: "coug it"

Ouch.

No, but this was one of their projected wins.Â

So when Stanford lost to WSU in that game in the 80s when the good guys were ahead 42-14 late but lost 49-42... Did Stanford "coug it"?

Yep.

I watched somewhat more of the game, and the way the the Cougs lost it was not particularly "Couging it", if that means to lose a game they had in the bag. Basically neither defense could stop the other team's offense, so it looked pretty likely that the winner would be the last team that got the ball with enough time left on the clock to score.

Agreed, it's not like they looked really good to start (actually sort of came back). I don't think the result was that surprising, WSU demonstrated their defense and running game suck, but they can put up a lot of yards/points passing. That's not a recipe for winning any close games easily, and they will likely be a lower to middling quality team again. I don't see that changing while Leach is in charge.Â
I liked Wilners line regarding WSU from his Stanford game-by-game predictions today, "no team whose offense has Raid in the nickname and cant stop the run is going to hold up against Stanfords ground-and-pound approach."

The Cougs did manage to produce an amusing box score:
Passing - 532 yards
Running - 6 yards
Looks like the cougs are determined to hold off C-A-L for title of least balanced offense.
