Congrats to Lombardi - Rally - 09-11-2014

I know some of you old timers don't like David Lombardi because he has worked for affiliates of you know who, but I have enjoyed his reports and videos.  Now he has been hired by ESPN to cover Pac12 sports.  A Stanford grad (and swimmer to boot) moving up!  Now I can link to him with impugnity, I guess.  Congrats to David!

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - stupac2 - 09-11-2014

I was wondering how long that would take. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on TV eventually.

To be honest, I've never liked Lombardi, and not because he worked for the Bootleg.  He just struck me as arrogant, opinionated, and his pieces were more about him than about what he was writing about.  In some ways, he represents a lot of what is wrong about the way sports are covered.  That being said, congratulations are still in order, and I do wish him well.  Hopefully he will grow as a sports commentator.

That is exactly what it takes to play the sports commentator game.  He's a good guy, but he's climbing a ladder where the rules are different in a less-awesome way.

Knowing Dave some he is an awesome person.  Also he has been on TV some.  Congrats to him, from a Board like this or the Bootleg to ESPN is awesome.  Just Awesome.    :)

Baffling, I've been reading his stuff for a while now and never gotten even a whiff of that. I think the only reason I know he's an alum or was a swimmer is from stuff either on here or that cohosts have said.

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - SamAtoms1980 - 09-12-2014

I remember D.M. Lombardi's early days on the Bootleg.  During the 2011 season, he wrote that Stanford had to win a national championship for the sake of college football because, by demonstrating that a program can win the title while playing the game the right way, it could cleanse the sport of all evil.  Or something to that effect.  Ha.

Of course, being so energetic and penetrating from the get-go, he always had the big-time in his destiny.  Congrats to him.

Lombardi - Redrum - 09-12-2014

Good for him.  It helps to have "our" people in high(er) places.  Right now a bunch of Duck and UDub posters are probably grousing about how now ESPN will be fawning all over Stanford and how their schools can never catch a break...or thereabouts.

I always thought he had talent.  I disliked the soundcloud audio on Scout as a way to get the story, mainly because I like to skim and cut to the chase,  reading the stuff that interests me.  Hate to have to listen to long audio about stuff in which I'm not interested  But that audio work was a solid choice for him and undoubtedly served as his audition material when making it to the bigs.  Well, maybe in ESPN's system,  he's still in minor league ball, but  he's in the door, and its always better to be inside than outside.

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - needle - 09-12-2014

Good for him, bad for us. I assume he won't be able to keep the Stanford focus if he's truly landed a job covering the conference for ESPN.

His twitter has been probably the single best source for Stanford news.

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - yvonne - 09-12-2014

I dunno. I haven't seen a Stanford story on ESPN.com since Sunday. It's probably because our game is on the Pac-12 Network, but they've definitely fallen off the bandwagon. Former Stanford blogger Kevin Gemmell has totally gone to the Dark Side. Look at his Twitter page.

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - CrazedZooChimp - 09-12-2014

I'm not a big Lombardi fan (I often thought his work came off as unprofessional, more like reading things from a fan blog than a professional reporter), but it is pretty cool now having 3/5 ESPN Pac-12 reporters being former Stanford reporters.  Kyle Bonagura seems lately to be doing the most Stanford coverage, although it seems like all of them have written some things about us (except maybe Jennings, I don't think I've actually read anything from her about us).

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - StanFan88 - 09-12-2014

I think Lombardi's work has gone way up in quality the last 3-4 seasons.  He's going to do well going forward, and I congratulate him on this big move up the food chain in a really tough field.

Re: Congrats to Lombardi - VFRing98 - 09-12-2014

I think people are confusing Lombardi with Novinson? Dave's work, at least lately, has been very professionally done. Sure, it's got an angle, but I think that reflected his close ties with both the bootleg community and the team. He'll have no problem transitioning for a broader audience. And his total output over the past couple of years is really impressive.

Echo what Bob says - this is a really big leap, and it's awesome for Dave.
