Seems Men's Soccer won last night, 1-0 up in Corvallis. That sets up a big showdown on the Pac-12 Networks with #5 Washington in Seattle.

Yep, could only follow via Gametracker, but the only goal was scored in the 88th minute by central defender Brandon Vincent, the team captain.  Seemed like a fairly even contest, and road wins are always good.

And it's not just a showdown, it's also a rematch.  Stanford lost to the Huskies in Seattle 1-0 in the 85th minute in the round of 16 in last year's NCAA tourney, and hasn't beaten UW since 2008.  They play a very physical brand of soccer, and in 2012 baited Vincent into a bad red card that forced Stanford to play with 10 men for the majority of the game.

Not only that, Washington is coached by Stanford alum Jamie Clark, who played for his father Bobby from 1996-98, going to the program's first College Cup in 1998.  The elder Clark left after the 2000 season to become (and is still) coach at Notre Dame, according to some gossip I heard because three top-20 recruits with great academic profiles were all rejected by <cue chorus> the new dean of admissions, Robin Mamlet.</chorus>

One other short note:  Field hockey, off the big upset of UConn, got to their highest ranking ever at #5 in this week's poll.  They travel to Pacific today and should have payback on their mind at Davis on Sunday, where their 3-2 OT loss to a team that was 3-7 knocked them from #6 to #13, which, coupled with their NorPac final 2-1 loss at Liberty, probably knocked them out of the postseason.

If they do win, they will probably set a new mark next week in terms of ranking, as #1 UNC hosts #3 UVa starting in about an hour.  If the Heels win, a victorious Stanford should jump the Cavaliers.  The other way around might be too much for the ACC-centric field hockey community to accept; the top 4 teams in the poll are all from that conference.
