Collosal Fold by USC in Pac-12 golf -
Hulk01 - 04-28-2015
I'd Sharpied Stanford in for third in the Pac-12s after they finished today, and SC had just two holes to play. The 17th at the Palouse course is a challenging par four, but is a two-shot par 5, a certain par at worse.
But at worse was just what happened to our beloved Trojans. On 17, they carded one par, two bogeys, a double, and a triple: +7.
Perhaps undone by that disaster, they went two-over on 18.Â
Stanford in second (+6 to USC's +10), nation's #3 ASU at -3.Â
Maverick McNeally, son of the famous Scott McNeally, continues to be Stanford's breakout athlete of the year. He leads the event at nine-under, four strokes clear of the Cal and Oregon guys in second. He's been so hot that the Wall Street Journal recently mentioned him as a possible future challenger to Rory McElroy and Jordan Spieth. Some story, this kid; the number three guy in his Stanford recruiting class has at shot at being the country's #1 player this season--just two years later.

The team is young. His teammates have demonstrated quite often their ability to go low. If they start to believe they can do it and a few balls drop here or there, the momentum will build quickly. It is not miraculous stuff that we need. The talent seems to be there. But golf is not a light switch. You can't just try harder. They need to find the right balance of focus and relaxation and be open to the potential. It could happen. It just isn't the highest probability outcome right now.

Hulk, you ConFed and I may be the only golf fans on the board. It appears that you have been following the results as closely as I have. Are you watching video online? Or just following the golfstat tracker (as I am)?
Notable to me is the leadership by the 2 frosh Swegle and Huang. Both are making their case to be in the top 5 for regionals. Boote is reliable. But the experienced players Badhwar and Grimes are struggling. Coach Ray may have to make a tough decision to leave one at home.Â
Do you happen to know why Swegle was DQ'd in Round 1?Â

Question for you golf fans... Have any of you watched any collegiate golf tournament at the Stanford golf course? When I looked at the calendar, I saw that Stanford usually hosts one tournament a year, and occasionally hosts one event a year or so (for example, October 17-20 the calendar shows a women's intercollegiate event. I know also that in the past the course has hosted the Pac-10/12 championships, regionals, and even the NCAA women's championship. Is it worth going to one of the events to watch live?

Only if you enjoy watching golf, BC.

It's a little like going to a AAA baseball game. There are some extraordinary players who are going to be stars. There are also a great number of very good players who are going to be club champions year in and year out. There are some really-not-so-good players who are going to be accountants. But you can follow the extraordinary players very closely and get a true sense of the tension inherent in high level competition. Much more intimate than going to a tournament on the PGA Tour - by far.

Been a Stanford golf fan a long time. Got to know Conrad back in my Advisory Board days, still communicate a couple times a year.
Slide has some insights on the team (and a damn good golf game.) He may know the Liu story. I didn't try to press on it with Conrad.Â
I don't watch them on video, no. Watched most of last year's NCAA's, partly because Prairie Dunes is among my son Will's two or three favorite courses. Will--who worked on Bandon Dunes and Old McDonald, and pulled a stint at Royal County Down--drove cross country a four years ago to play Sand Hills, Prairie Dunes, and every Donald Ross course he came upon and shot almost 200 photos of the course. The greens complexes--just from seeing them in his photos--are my favorites of any, anywhere.
The new format for the NCAAs makes anything possible. Cal should have been handed the big trophy two years ago, but fell victim to the near-arbitrariness of the match play format. Stanford crushed the field in stroke play last year and seemed a worthier champion than anyone else. Hell, I once tied our state champ in match play and had no business being on the course with him.
So they've made the NCAA finals more interesting, but less a measure of the nation's best golf team. Maybe we get revenge this year, thanks in part because Boote has so much experience with match play. Get a win from Maverick or Badman, another from Swegle and whomever plays fifth, and let Boote give us the trophy. It could happen, just because the format allows damn near anything to happen.

No way Conrad leaves Virat at home. Maverick, Boote, Virat, Swegle, and Huang all go.Â
Oh: No idea on the DQ in round one. Hoped to read an explanation somewhere but haven't seen one. Again, slide may know.

It had something to do with hitting a ball into a hazard, hitting a second (as a 'provisional'), finding the first ball, blah blah blah. I'm not clear on the rules, but believe that once he hit the second that became his 'ball of record', but he then played the first ball (after a drop) and scored the hole with that ball. Which meant he signed an invalid scorecard.
Or something like that ::)
Great to see Tank step up time and again; the kid's a baller.
Agree with Hulk01's take on the regional lineup. Lots of talent on this team.

If one is not sure that his or her ball has is lost in a water hazard or outside it (i.e. in deep grass nearf the hazard) he or she is not allowed to play a provisional ball from the tee. This is one of the least known and most arcane elements of the Rules of Golf. I learned this (to my detriment) whilst playing in a USGA competition.

Stanford started 9 shots behind ASU but closed that gap within a few holes. Looks like the teams will go back and forth for the rest of the round. Wish that Pac 12 Network had live coverage. Also McNealy has pulled away from the field in the individual race. He currently leads by 8 shots.

Stanford currently -3 for today's round while ASU is +10, leaving Stanford in first place 4 strokes ahead of ASU.

Assuming that scores are verified and official, Stanford has defended its Pac 12 golf championship with the lowest round of the tournament, 10 under par or a total of 340. Stanford blew past ASU which shot 13 over today. Stanford led by medalist Maverick McNealy who shot a bogey free 61!!
Now we wait for the NCAA to announce regional assignments next Monday. Regionals to be played at:
The Sagamore Club -- Noblesville, Ind.
UNC Finley Golf Course -- Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Farms Golf Club -- San Diego, Calif.
The Rawls Course -- Lubbock, Texas
Gold Mountain Golf Club -- Bremerton, Wash.
The Course at Yale -- New Haven, Conn.
A guess - ASU goes to San Diego, Stanford goes to Washington. Would be nice to stay in the Pacific time zone.

Maverick's 61 came within a stroke of trying the Pac 12 record of 60, set by Paul Casey, and ties him Tiger and Cameron Wilson for the lowest Stanford tournament round ever. (Badwhar's incredible 59 at Stanford Golf Course is the record non-tournament round.)Â
Tiger's 61, however, came on par 72 course, in the first round of the conference championships.
This team is worthy watching. I don't recall a team with this many players who improved as much over a season. McNeally, Badwhar, and Boote all have dropped their average scores significantly. In Maverick's case, it's been stunning: two-plus strokes per round, I believe. I'd be interested what, if anything, they have changed in their approach. Mav has been unreal at times.

Even Swegle finished well. He was Even over the last three rounds after his DQ in the first round.

As Hulk previously said, and I observed in a separate thread some time ago in a discussion of our need to find SOME place to nail down a NC in some sport, golf offers a real possibility due to the format which is designed to open up the possibilities for a team to emerge. Of course, that can work against us, because the format lends itself to somewhat arbitrary outcomes. But as the team demonstrated this week, when they start feeling the momentum, they can go very low. They are playing well. The format worked against us before. Maybe we're due now.

Not a golfer, but I have to ask: what if you're sure it's lost, but then someone finds it after all? And what's a "provisional" ball anyway?
