Today in opponent addition: Ca.l -

Jaylen Brown, a consensus Top 5 hoops recruit in the 2015 class committed to Ca.l last night. Along with fellow Top 10 recruit Ivan Rabb, and two other consensus Top 150 players, Cuonzo Martin is bringing in a Top 5 recruiting class to Berkeley.
Another program that had no interest in potential one and done players previously, has now accepted it. I just don't see Stanford ever taking a one and done player. What recruit would go through the Stanford admissions gauntlet to be on campus for just one year?

Stanford would have taken Jabari Parker had he chosen us.

Someone who planned on coming back to Stanford to complete his degree when his NBA career was finished?

Wow. I don't remember Cal recruiting so well in basketball since the Todd Bozeman era.

Why does the caption say "opponent attrition"?

I would assume because we do our best on this board to avoid ever saying anything positive about the Bares.

Muir told me on the phone he has zero interest in recruiting one-and-dones. He has been lobbying the NBA behind the scenes to adopt a policy somewhat similar to the NFL where if you decide to play college basketball with a scholarship you cannot enter the NBA draft for three years.

It doesn't.

isn't the NFL rule "you can't play in the NFL until 3 years after your class graduated from high school" and it does not matter if you go to college or not?

Oops. My mistake. I read "addition" as "attrition."
That might have an interesting effect -

I wonder if the D League will become more viable, were that to occur. The best D league players make $25,000 plus $40 per diem, insurance and some housing benefits. Smallish crowds, but full time basketball environment. Perhaps the coaching is better? If you're not academically inclined, it becomes an almost mandatory decision, unless you find an NCAA school willing to whore itself out and essentially allow you to play without any meaningful academic participation.

In any case, it would be impossible to be absolute about this. A player declares for the NBA draft after he's already been recruited. We might have zero interest in recruiting a one-and-done but we certainly have interest in recruiting players who are good enough to be drafted after their first year.

I always thought that McEnroe came to Stanford with the intention of turning pro after he won an NCAA singles title, which he expected to do in the first year.
Given his ego, coupled with his performance at Wimbledon the previous year, I don't think it came as a particular surprise to him that he was beating the hell out of everyone.
