Kevin Hogan in the record books -
BostonCard - 07-28-2015
In another thread, someone mentioned that Hogan has a chance to move up to the lead in career completion percentage. His current completion percentage is 65.2%, second only to Andrew Luck's 67%, which means that with a decent year, he has a chance to take over the record. Luck has a chance to move up in the records in a number of categories:
Passing yards: 6523 (if I did my math right), currently sixth. In front of him are:
Todd Husak (6564 yds)
John Paye (7669 yds)
John Elway (9349 yds)
Andrew Luck (9430 yds)
Steve Stenstrom (10531 yds)
Barring injury, he will almost certainly end up ahead of Husak and Paye, and has a good shot of beating Elway and Luck. It would take a monster year (4008 yards) to take the record from Stenstrom. Hogan's best year was 2014, when he threw 2792 yards; if he equals that, he will move into third.
Touchdowns: 48, currently 4th. Ahead of him are:
Steve Stenstrom (72)
John Elway (77)
Andrew Luck (82)
With a good year, he could move ahead of Stenstrom, and with a very good year he could move ahead of Elway. Luck is likely out of reach barring a monster year (well, a year as good as Luck had in 2011, when he threw 37). FWIW, Hogan's best year was 2013, when he threw 20 TD's; if he equals that, he will stay in fourth.
Yards per attempt: 8.16 ypa, currently fourth. Ahead of him are:
Turk Schonert (8.4 ypa)
Andrew Luck (8.86)
Joe Borchard (8.94)
Because ypa will depend on both attempts and yards, it's hard to project how he will do. Hogan's best year was 2013, when he had an average of 8.9 ypa. I suspect if he equaled that and had a decent number of attempts this year, he could move into third behind Borchard and Luck.
I'm sure Hogan has a chance at some other records, but I haven't looked to see where else he's close.

Stanford revised its record book a few years ago to include bowl game stats for all players. This affected players such as Plunkett, Benjamin, Stenstrom, and Husak, who played in an era in which bowl game stats were not included in the official stats. Stanford's revised record book therefore differs somewhat from some of the numbers given by BC above.
I don't think these revised numbers significantly change BC's analysis of where Hogan could end up. So BC's post is pretty much on target, in my view.
Hogan's current position in the record book:
Career passing yards
10,911Â Stenstrom
 9,430 Luck
 9,349 Elway
 7,809 Plunkett
 7,669 Paye
 6,834 Husak
 6,518 Hogan
Career TD passes
82Â Luck
77Â Elway
74Â Stenstrom
53Â Plunkett
48Â Benjamin
48Â Hogan
Completion percentage (minimum 300 attempts)*
67.0%Â Luck
65.2%Â Hogan
63.1%Â Dils
62.8%Â Stenstrom
62.4%Â Palumbis
Yards per attempt (minimum 300 attempts)*
8.86Â Luck
8.16Â Hogan
7.92Â Fasani
7.91Â Stenstrom
7.87Â Plunkett
Pass efficiency rating (minimum 300 attempts)*
162.8Â Luck
148.3Â Hogan
141.4Â Stenstrom
139.3Â Elway
138.8Â Dils
Career rushing yards by a QB
957Â Luck
913Â Hogan
481Â Bunce
369Â Plunkett
362Â Washington
* The Stanford record book requires a minimum of 300 career attempts to qualify for efficiency-based records. That renders ineligible Schonert (230 attempts, 66.1%, 8.40 yds/att, 160.7 pass eff. rating) and Borchard (120 attempts, 8.92 yds/att, 154.1 pass eff. rating).

Thanks Terry... I knew my past would bait you. I appreciate the corrections. The list of stats I found was after 1970, which is how Plunkett got left off *gasp*.

Question: is there a combined TD leaderboard (i.e. rushing + passing TDs)?

That category in not in the Stanford record book. But I ran the numbers, and here's what it looks like.

82 Elway    (5 rush, 77 pass)
77 Stenstrom (3 rush, 74 pass)
63 Plunkett   (10 rush, 53 pass)
57 Hogan    (9 rush, 48 pass)
55 Benjamin  (7 rush, 48 pass)
47 Paye     (9 rush, 38 pass)
45 Taylor    (40 rush, 5 rec.)
45 Gerhart   (44 rush, 1 pass)
44 Husak    (3 rush, 41 pass)
42 Nelson    (24 rush, 18 rec.)

So Hogan's closing in on the record for most rushing TDs by a QB, no?

Some of those guys also have receiving td's. Luck would have had one too if Toby could have thrown the ball to him.

I looked for receiving TDs by these quarterbacks, but I didn't find any. If I missed something, please let me know.
By the way, I don't remember Toby missing Luck. I believe Terrell and Griff Whalen each completed one to Luck.

NM. I didn't see that you added receiving td's to the running backs totals. Surprised Toby never caught a TD.

Just for comparison's sake, Colin Kaepernick rushed for 59 TDs at Nevada during his career and passed for 82 TDs.

Different style of offense, different level of competition. Stanford hasn't used an offense featuring the QB as a primary ballcarrier in many years.

I believe Griff completed a pass to Luck against Arizona in 2009. But I haven't double-checked it.

Yep, from the boxscore that appears to be true. For 11 yards.

That was a crazy game - but I only got to listen to the end of it.
I cannot find a video of the play, but here is Dave Lombardi's audio call:

I think the pass in question was completed ("miracle one handed catch on the way out of bounds.). Whoever the coach was said after the game it would have gone for a touchdown if thrown better.

From the video, it looks like a UCLA defender had a good angle on Luck and could have stopped Luck from scoring. But with Luck, you never know. Maybe he would have flattened the guy and rumbled into the end zone.

I think it was the Terrell pass, out of the much maligned wildcat? I also don't know but from the tone of the coach's post game comment I suppose it was Harbaugh.
