More things to worry about - 97fan - 12-30-2010

1) UCLA has Vic Fangio at the top of its list for defensive coordinator, according to the Orange County Register. Fangio worked with Rick Neuheisel with the Ravens and has had a "strained relationship" with Jim Harbaugh, according to the Register.

2) Stud LB recruit James Vaughters tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he would reconsider his verbal commitment if Harbaugh leaves, and intimates that other Stanford recruits feel the same way. "I\'ve talked to a lot of the other recruits," Vaughters says. "Basically, the way we\'re looking at it is if he stays we\'re good."

The next few weeks will certainly be eventful.

Re: More things to worry about - yvonne - 12-30-2010

It\'s all part of the Cycle of Suckage™.

We\'ll get a coach who will either be bad, in which case, he\'ll be fired in 4 years, or we\'ll get a good coach, and the media will begin guessing games about when he\'ll leave because he\'s obviously too good for us. Then, he\'ll be gone in 4 years. Either way, without the continuity, we\'re bound to suck.

What decent player would want to be a part of that?

Speaking of Fangio - needle - 12-30-2010

I really, really want to meet Vic Fangio after reading this article. Just not after dark on a deserted city street...

Intense Fangio has settled Stanford\'s defense

Quote:Linebacker Shayne Skov dubbed him "Lord Fangio" early in the season because of his "maniacal voice" and because he\'s "like an evil genius."

Cornerback Richard Sherman said his first impression of Fangio when he joined the staff this year after 24 years in the NFL was that of a "stone cold killer."

Re: More things to worry about - yvonne - 12-30-2010

Maybe hiring Fangio is a way to keep some of the wheels on the wagon.

So what has changed? - Redrum - 12-30-2010

The idea that kids commit to a coach as much as a school is not something we\'re discovering just now.   Yeah,  JH leaving would put a hit on the recruiting class,  just like his position now has attracted a lot of these guys.   Just part of the cost, part of the pain.  Pay him what the market says he\'s worth,  then if he bolts to Michigan  or to the NFL it will be for reasons that are completely out of Stanford\'s control.   If his personal fulfillment  always lay at UM or always in the NFL,  we never had a long lasting claim on him.   Just a crappy end to our lucky run with him.

I don\'t know about the Vic Fangio/ Harbaugh friction stories.  I can see where it might be true that Harbaugh\'s charged up personality,  open feelings and ambition might grate on some.   But on the other hand,  in sports and in business  people stay in similar circumstances to be part of something that succeeds.   Further,  it might not be true.  Could be UCLA types conflating their needs with their wishes with the fact that Neuheisel and Fangio once worked together.  Could be that Slick Rick grates on Vic as much as they believe Harbaugh does.  And one reason to doubt the friction story:  Every time  Harbaugh opens his mouth these days, he praises Fangio and the job he\'s done.  It seems that JH has gone out of his way --as he does with his players-- to take the adulation off him and put it on others.  Prima facie evidence that JH invests himself on good staff relations.

Re: More things to worry about - Farm93 - 12-30-2010

This one is not troubling to me.  I doubt ole Slick Rick has that great of a relationship with the man.  I also doubt Slick Rick will be the UCLA coach in 2012, and I would put good money that he will not be the coach in 2013.  So why on Earth would a smart man join that staff?

JH praises Fangio endlessly.  After Marecic and Luck, I would guess Fangio is the next most mentioned name in JH conferences.  If Fangio needs more love, as the article would imply, then really I guess he should go.

Back to reality. Fangio could do almost anything, but he elected to come here.  After one year he bolts? for a similar job? in the same conference? on a staff with less security?  That really does not sense.

Now, perhaps he leaves Stanford to become the Head Coach at UCLA, that I would understand.

Post Script - Oh, there is one way that move makes sense to me at least.  And that is that Fangio knows JH will be leaving and JH\'s fondness of Fangio\'s work does not include taking Fangio with him to the new gig.

Re: More things to worry about - washingtonismoney - 12-30-2010

Interestingly, Vic Fangio says Vic Fangio is happy at Stanford:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/12/29/SP8N1H1DT4.DTL

But I\'m sure Rick is much more trustworthy.

Re: More things to worry about - pefloresjr - 12-30-2010

When Wilner directly asked Fangio about it, Fangio told him he hadn\'t talked to Neuweasel, had no interest and planned to be at Stanford next year.  That\'s pretty clear to me.

I wondered that when Fangio as hired.  Odd career move to go from long time NFL coordinator to a small school not known for football unless you view it as a steppingstone - or just want a change. Tactically I think he\'s ready obviously and I\'m glad the story said he\'s taking to recruiting.  However, I was at an event preseason where all the coaches spoke. Vic seemed the least comfortable and effective at public speaking.  He\'d have to have a dynamic staff to balance his dour personality.

Hey, I\'m sure we could find a place for Buddy - JohnR34231 - 12-31-2010

Saw where he actually had a winning season at Dartmouth this year. First one in God-knows-how-many years and head coaching gigs.

Good for Buddy - Redrum - 12-31-2010

Glad that the kids who played for him got to experience success.  No football scholarships, per se in the Ivies.   They have to bring in bigger classes just to field a team because so many aren\'t really competitive even for the Ivies and a lot of them just say &%$* it and go drink at the frat house.   Buddy was a good person who was in over his head.  I think he\' s probably at his right level at Dartmouth, although you wouldn\'t have guessed it from his first  years back there.

Dartmouth the football factory? - JohnR34231 - 12-31-2010

Saw a picture of Buddy getting the old Gatorade bath after a final game 35-0 victory over Princeton (begs the question of how bad Princeton must be) sealed their winning season. Wonder when the last time that happened to him was?

I didn\'t see Princeton play... - Mick - 12-31-2010

...when I was back there, but a friend of mine (also visiting his kid)  decided to take in a Princeton football game.  He left after a quarter.  Said he found it unwatchable.  First play he was was the Princeton QB throwing the ball six yards in front of the WR on an out pattern.  Princeton finished last in the Ivy League this year, though they generally are known for having the best Ivy athletic program and finished 33rd in last year\'s NACDA Director\'s Cup (Harvard was next at 64th).

Re: More things to worry about - yvonne - 12-31-2010

I\'m pretty sure that when Garvin refers to Idiotface, he\'s talking about Harris, not Teevens. Idiotface treated the players ruthlessly, and showed a general lack of faith in the team. Teevens was a nice guy in over his head.

Re: More things to worry about - terry - 12-31-2010

Buddy\'s record since he returned to Dartmouth:

2005  2-8
2006  2-8
2007  3-7
2008  0-10
2009  2-8
2010  6-4

Total 15-45

That\'s even worse than his record at Stanford (2-9, 4-7, 4-7; total 10-23).

It took him a long time to have a winning season. In fairness, he inherited a program that was a bottom-dweller, so he didn\'t have a lot to work with. This season was Dartmouth\'s first winning season in 13 years. It will be interesting to see whether it was a fluke or whether he\'s building something.

Oh hey, you\'re the one who backs up any assertion with dizzying statistical evidence!

... Do I get some?

Re: More things to worry about - yvonne - 12-31-2010

Let\'s try that again.

When Garvin refers to Idiotface, he\'s not talking about the man who is coaching at Dartmouth, but the one who is an assistant at California University in Pennsylvania.  That is to say, Idiotface is the name of the man who coached at Stanford immediately before Harbaugh.
