First album: Styx, Paradise Theater*
First cassette: The Smiths, Strange Ways Here We Come
First CD: The Police, Ghost in the Machine
First Concert: The Police, Synchronicity Tour, 1983 (Openers: Berlin, The Fixx, Thompson Twins)

+1 on the Police.  My first CD may have been The Best Of CD (or it might have been REM's Out of Time; I got the two pretty close together).

I haven't been to many concerts; I grew up in Latin America, so few acts came by.  My first concert might have been REM at the Shorline while I was at Stanford.  One of the few concerts I've been to was The Police during their reunion tour a few years ago at Dodger Stadium.

My first album was some compilation album created in Venezuela.  It featured Jump by Van Halen and Big in Japan by Alphaville among others that I have long since forgotten.  First casette (and pretty much all of them) was a mix tape.

iTunes tells me that the first album I purchased from Apple was No Line on the Horizon by U2.

A big step.  I don't know why I didn't buy more records back then.  Part of it was KFWB and KRLA and eventually a Pasadena-based underground alternative FM station did a pretty good job disseminating rock music over the airwaves (remember radio... over the air?).  Part of it was economic. Job money was mostly gas money.  Part of it was my home:  One stereo, parents in house...not conducive.  And yet, I never felt deprived.  Music was everywhere in SoCal. In my bedroom radio, at school, in the car.  And my dad kept playing his Stan Getz albums, slowly, slowly infiltrating my psyche.

My first rock and roll records were the Nancy Sinatra albums Boots and How Does That Grab You, gifts at Christmas 1966. I played them until there wasn't a single groove left on the vinyl. Fifty years later, I got to interview her. She was (and I'm sure still is) very sweet.

She...and that 'Boots' song...are prominently featured in the Wrecking Crew documentary.

You interviewed her in 2016? Did I fall asleep again? How did Stanford football do in 2015 and 2016?

He was rounding up, Robbie. Obviously, you are not versed in common core math...

And here's the incriminating evidence: http://www.popmatters.com/article/10-yea...legend-al/

And for the record, Stanford football won the Pac-12 North in 2015, as I've already stated elsewhere on the CARDBoard.

I seem to be among the exceptions: I generally prefer the music of the last 15 years.

My best shot at my favorite almost 20 songs of all time, broken down by decade:

60’s:
Runaway, Del Shannon
Dancing In The Street, Martha and The Vandellas
Pretty Woman, Roy Orbison
Satisfaction, Rolling Stones

70’s:
None

80’s:
Whole Of The Moon, The Waterboys
Take Me Home Tonight, Eddie Money and Ronnie Spector (favorite music video)
Always On My Mind, Pet Shop Boys (choice as best produced single song)

90’s:
Fields of Gold, Sting
My Back Pages (song and favorite live performance, Bob Dylan’s 30th anniversary concert),  Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Roger McGuinn)

00’s:
One More Time, Daft Punk
Fake Empire, The National
Human, The Killers
You’ve Got the Love, Florence + The Machine

10’s:
Video Games, Lana Del Rey
Song for Zula, Phosphorescence
Red Eyes, The War on Drugs
Stay Gold, First Aid Kit

The video of the My Back Pages performance knocks me out every time I watch it, and I have a special affection for McGuinn, who gave his time to me very generously when I was researching creativity for one of my books.  It’s also fair to list this song in the 60’s, too, as I first heard and loved it one its release by The Byrds.  The Byrds also trigger a special memory for me; they co-headline with The Jefferson Airplane for a 1967 concert in which I danced onstage with Grace Slick.

On the off chance you haven't heard this remix version.  I actually like it even more.  The PSB are a terrific cover band.  Their take on songs usually stands up well against the better known versions and sounds sufficiently different to have originality to it.

I considered Pet Shop Boys a "guilty pleasure", but I've enjoyed their music.  Thanks for the remix Publius.  I'd add the cover of U2's Where the Streets Have No Name as another great PSB song (also: Domino Dancing, It's a Sin, Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money), and Rent).

Also, Hulk, Fields of Gold is a very underrated Sting song.  One of the most lyrically poetic songs I've ever heard.

Yes, Fields of Gold is there for the poetry.

Whole of The Moon, same.  It's atop my Best Lyrics list.

Best Lyrics finalists:
Whole Of The Moon, Waterboys
Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes
Fields of Gold, Sting
Song for Zula, Phosphorescence
Fake Empire, The National
King of The New York Streets, Dion
Merry Go Round, Kacey Musgraves
The Way It Is, Bruce Hornsby
Stay Gold, First Aid Kit (kills me every single time--still)
Philadelphia, Neil Young (genius)
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, The Beatles

I loved the Beach Boys and Beatles; I've seen the Boys more times in concert than any other group.  The two groups offer me lots of top 100 candidates, but only Hide Your Love Away cracks my top 40.

Eva Cassidy's rendition of Fields of Gold is the best I have ever heard.  Also, her version of Over the Rainbow is the best version of that ballad.

For better or worse, Journey owes a considerable debt to the Stanford Daily. Entertainment writer and then editor Joan Hinman was a rabid supporter from 1971 through 1975, writing tons of stories about them and reviewing their concerts at a time nobody else was paying any attention to them. Finally her bosses pulled the plug, saying we'd way overdone it for years and it was time to acknowledge that other local bands existed. Ironically, that happened in early 1975, about the time they finally got a recording contract and released an album.

I always wondered who I should blame... :P :P :P

+1000 perhaps 20 + years of working bars and clubs has jaded me, but if I hear the following songs I want to harm the person that put them on:

Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl
Journey- Don't Stop Believing
Don McClain- American Pie
Aqua - Barbie Girl

LOL!  You do not want to ride in our station wagon on a road trip.  The first three songs are among my wife's favorite songs.  (I tease her relentlessly about her mainstream tastes. "Baby ears").  And the one with the actual baby ears, loves Aqua, specifically Happy Boys & Girls.  She especially likes that Cookie Monster is part of the group.

Brown-Eyed Girl is a great record, about the one who got away. Not surprised it's a barroom jukebox favorite...in the late hours, one beer over the line..

It was a favorite of mine and I liked to sing it... then I found out several people in the band I was singing with were tired of it and didn't want to play it anymore. (Deflecting the inevitable barb: I don't think it was because my singing; several of us used to trade off vocals on it.)

Well, that was pretty spectacular.  He opens his mouth and I was jolted by the soft beauty of his voice.  Do you think those were his ashes being strewn at the end?  I had the feeling that the video was some kind of memorial.

This video is not nearly as visually stunning, but I still prefer her singing.

Yes, his ashes.  As near pure Hawaiian as you can get.  Consider pure alii by native people.
