I wonder if, on top of his income, Shaw is afforded a preferred position in certain investments which would be both lucrative and highly unlikely at other schools. The 990 only references Stanford income, not all of Shaw's income. Just wondering aloud.
Coach Shaw is likely getting a healthy chunk of money from a variety of sources. However, I would guess your average big program State U coach likely gets more from those same type of sources. Shaw could have an equity stake in a few Stanford sports related start-ups, so that could help.
I am more amazed by JD's $1.8. Stanford might pay Coach Shaw less per win than JD this academic year.

There comes a point in life, for most people paying attention, where you find yourself comfortable and happy, making more than enough to insure your family's future, and don't want more. I have no idea, of course, but I suspect the only thing that could move Shaw is, after two or three national championships at Stanford, he felt the pull of a higher challenge. That might be a Super Bowl. Or it might be becoming a Buddhist Monk. But I don't think it's money. If it were, with the jobs now open, he would have put himself out there and doubled or tripled his current salary.

I'd say he's waiting for Jim Tomsula to self-immolate, but that's already happened. Once Jed York recognizes that there's a corpse inhabiting his head coach's office, I'm guessing he reaches out to Shaw. Shaw, being a smart Stanford fella, will hopefully reject Jed, Baalke and Paraag with all due speed.
