Obviously the police can get a bad rap, and some do reprehensible things, but the officers demonstrated great professionalism on that video.
Parry, OTOH, wow. I hope if he sees this video he vows never to consume another drop of alcohol the rest of his life. He didn't hurt anyone, but man did alcohol impair his judgment and make him look like a fool. As I watched, I thought "please don't try to kick or punch or head butt anyone." He thankfully didn't do that, but the words that came out of his mouth were not what one would expect from a Stanford man.

Anybody who has been to Stanford knows that of the 7.000 or so undergrads there are a not insignificant number of these peers and pals who have or will have gone off the rails sometime in their lives.
I hope for David Parry that he can get back on the rails after restiutution and do something really really good in those 40-50+ years that we talk about with our recruits.

Stymie, I went off the rails more than once while on the farm. I am not sure I am on the right track, but there are rails under me for sure. I could not watch more than a few minutes of that video as it reminded me of a certain night where I went way off the track and a couple of close friends kept me from going to jail. FYI no cars etc. involved just a very drunk buddha trying to curse out Stanford PD before I had some sense (literally) knocked into me by some friends.

He was completely sh!tfaced. At that point, the judgement and morality are out the window. He couldn't form coherent sentences. His decisions happened as he was becoming impaired. After that, its luck.
I don't see his behavior as any worse than anybody else who allows themselves to get hammered, unless he's had a history.

When I was a teenager, myself and friends would watch the Jerry Springer Show during breaks. This acquainted me with the term "one thing led to another," as many of his programs were about some form of significant others cheating on each other, and often someone ending up with an unwanted or expected pregnancy. The saw was always "We were drunk, we couldn't help ourselves." Having not yet experienced any similar life situations, and not yet getting off my ass drunk, I just assumed this was a real thing, that when drunk, you can't control your behavior.
I never really was into drinking alcohol in high school, but in college, became a binge drinker for a couple years. Never once when hammered, did I do stupid, destructive things that I wouldn't have done if completely sober. Most people say things they wouldn't say sober, when drunk, but even when I could barely talk, there was a part of me that was always aware there were behaviors I shouldn't engage in, that crossed the line from being silly to destructive. I knew when I shouldn't drive. I never vandalized anything. I never took advantage of a woman. And I sure as hell wasn't dumb enough to steal a vehicle, get arrested, or threaten police officers.
Alcohol is used as a crutch to excuse bad behavior. "Oh, I was drunk and couldn't control myself. That wasn't me, that was the alcohol." NONSENSE. The reality is the true character of people comes out when they are drunk. The same guys who have unprotected sex with women and use "I was drunk" as an excuse after getting her pregnant, would have unprotected sex if sober. I knew if I wanted to avoid getting a woman pregnant, I would need to wrap up, even when drunk. It wasn't like my respect for women, or appreciation for consequences of my behavior dissolved when inebriated.
It just really bothers me when people blame other people or things, when they themselves make the choices that put them in situations they later regret. Alcohol is a dangerous substance that can impair judgment, but it doesn't suspend it completely. The idea that "he was drunk so his actions really can't be taken too seriously," is preposterous.
