The Catch is one of my top 10 sports memories, and I wasnt really a 49er fan. Watched it in the lobby in Roble with half the dorm. Thank you Dwight.

You may have read that Everson Walls and Dwight Clark would occasionally do autograph shows together.  They actually became quite friendly.  Kodak was using the image of "The Catch"  and both Montana and Clark got $5k or $10k out of it, and when Clark finally met Walls off the field, he asked Walls if he'd been paid yet.  So Walls always liked Clark.

Incidentally, Walls was no slouch.  He led the league in interceptions three times, including his rookie and second year.  Also two interceptions and a fumble return in the 1981 playoffs.

Very sorry to hear about Dwight's challenges.  I worked for the 49ers in high school at their Rocklin summer training camps.  "The Catch" was my first ever pro football game.  My Mom and I had been bussed down from Rocklin with the other Sierra College employees for the game and we were all sitting in that end zone.  What a great game!

I actually ran into Dwight in Menlo Park in the mid-90's as he was living nearby before he moved to Cleveland with Carmen Policy.  He was very nice and humble and remembered me from Summer Training Camps.  I hope he plateaus, per the comments in the article.  He truly had a knack for finding open space and he, Freddy and "Skeets" were quite the receiving trio, later to be joined by another great guy - Jerry Rice.  The 49ers were very good back then - not so much anymore, but I've stopped watching the NFL over the years.  Stanford is much more fun!

It was a great play, and probably is the most memorable play in 49er football lore (but not NFL lore, as article states - still think the Immaculate Reception has The Catch beat).

And while The Catch has attained legendary status, few remember that The Catch was almost a "nice play" footnote.  Dallas had plenty of time to mount a final scoring drive and win, but the 49er D managed to stop a pretty good, Danny White-led Cowboys offense on their final drive.  Think a big sack was involved, but am shaky on the details.

On to the important stuff - always tough to see "larger than life" professional athletes wrecked by ALS and it is a pernicious disease.  Here's hoping for a cure - or at least a way to slow/stymie its body-destroying effects - in our lifetimes.

Wrong again. the IR was the most infamous play in NFL lore, just ahead of the tuck. Anything to keep Al down. Anyway, the most memorable play in NFL history, and probably the most important, was Alan Ameche's 1 yd run. . . .

For those who might not remember him, Ameche was an  H award winner in the 1950s who went on to play for the Baltimore Colts and had the key touchdown in the first NFL sudden death championship game in 1958. I believe it may have also been the first nationally televised NFL game.

Other contenders for most (in)famous play:

*  Bart Starr's sneak for a TD in the Ice Bowl;

*  Jim Marshall's wrong way TD run for the Vikings;

*  The "helmet catch" by NY Giant David Tyree against the undefeated Pats in the Super Bowl;

*  Leon Lett's "TD" run in Super Bowl (turns out to be first of many NFLers voluntarily relinquishing control of the ball before reaching pay dirt, although the only one in the Biggest Game);

I'm sure there are others, depending on geography, fandom, etc.

I think they may have named the field at Camp Randall Stadium for him.

Ameche played for Wisconsin in college, didn't he? Seems to me he was part of the lore I grew up with, though my family was more into the Packers than the Badgers. My Wisconsin fandom burgeoned when Ron Vaderkellen almost came back from 42-14 to beat U$C in the 1963(?) Rose Bowl. At that time it seemed as if the Big 10 ALWAYS won the RB, except when Wisconsin was playing.

Another good "Bay Area" play for the list is the sea of hands play, Stabler to Clarence Davis against Miami. Playoffs in '74?
