Taggart to FSU official, reports Bruce Feldman

Wow. After 1 year on the job. I'm intrigued to see how this goes.
Also intrigued to see what happens to their #1-in-the-PAC12 recruiting class. There were a couple guys linked to us, so maybe there's a chance at a flip?

I posted a long time ago that going to USouthFlorida was a horrible career choice for Taggart.
Five years later, this just shows that I know absolutely nothing.
I will be curious to see what the difference in salary will be at FSU compared to Oregon, where he reportedly was earning $2.9 million a year. Jimbo Fisher made $5.7 million. I don't think Taggart will be getting that much, but $5 million seems "reasonable."

This should be in bold under an "Opponents Attrition" heading. The could be as bad or worse a hit for the Oregon program as the Willingham fiasco was for Stanford. This will gut their top 10 recruiting class (3X4star decommitments already). There are also several first year Florida kids who saw playing time @ UO who may well be inclined to transfer back to FSU, even if it means red-shirting for a year.
Reports are out that DC Leavitt will be joining Taggart@ FSU (matt prehm; rivals) which would mean several more recruits that he was point man for may also be leaving. Leavitt did a masterful job in one year improving UOs CFB total defense rating from high 120s to around 40. Plus, Taggart has 3-4 assistant coaches who came with him from USF, so they will almost certainly follow him as well.
This will be similar to the 6 assistant coaches that Willingham took with him to Domerville. This late coaching carousel turn over will make getting quality assistant coaches a real challenge and way more expensive and make the HC selection a real crapshoot. The Ducks may well be headed for a looong Buddy/Wlat bottoming out that Uncle Phil is not going to be able to buy his way out of.
With Oregon State in rebuilding mode, Leach @ WSU in jeopardy of jumping with AD Moos having moved to Nebraska, Cal still.....well, Cal, and the Ducks dropping back, it will be Cardinal and Huskies in the north for the next several years. In the south, ASU's seppuku by hire probably balanced by Kelly's hire @ UCLA, but overall the league looks like it may be much easier to navigate in 2018, and a one loss champion may then make the playoffs!

I have several Duck fans that are mightily angry about this. They were literally crowing about their recruiting class and felt that with a healthy Herbert at the helm in '18 they could regain their swagger against the likes of Stanford and especially the detested Huskies.
Just a week ago Jimbo Fisher was accosted by a fan during Fisher's radio show asking "Where's the loyalty to the program?"Â With the millions being tossed around right now for head coaches it just makes me appreciate Coach David Shaw that much more.

Not all the positions have been filled yet...and Leach's name seems to be mentioned for most of them. I think there's still a good chance he moves, unless it's all his agent's ploy to get a juicier new contract.

I doubt it was merely a ploy; he seemed like he was on the verge of going to Tennessee before the Fulmer coup.

True. I think I saw somewhere on twitter that the Tennessee coaching search would make a great 30 for 30, and I'm in for that.

Moos took a risk in hiring a then tainted Leach to WSU, and was just fine with his quirkyness and always had his back. He's not going to be the new ADs 'man' and may be inclined to be looking out for himself going forward. That's the jeopardy I was referring to. As others have noted above, his name is being kicked around a lot.

Does the pirate "crew" trust the pirate captain who tried to jump ship and leave them marooned in Pullman? It could evolve like Arizona has, where the school, the fans, and the coach are not really happy with the situation, but nobody involved has a good alternative choice. Rich Rod was supposedly going to be out at Arizona this year until Khalil Tate burst upon the scene (due to a "fortunate" injury) and ensured at least one more year of coaching "tension". I think it likely that Leach is now much more actively trying to move on, and may take an offer he wouldn't have taken before the Tennessee debacle.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that if Leach ends up staying, all is forgiven until and unless the losses start piling up.
However, I think the most valuable coaching commodity in Pullman lately is Alex Grinch. WSU has been known for offense, my impression has been that they recruit better for offense (not sure), but lately their defense has been by far the better unit and more responsible for the wins.
For example, WSU is #97 in the country in offense-FEI and #8 in defense-FEI. I think you will find similar disparity in other advanced stats. I am very impressed with what Grinch put together with an undersized front and not particularly awesome individual talent. [One first team all-conference DL (Mata'afa), one second team all-conference DB (Thompson) who was among the multi-way tie for the final spot, one LB honorable mention (Luvu).]

If WSU's defense was not what is was this year, I doubt that any of us would be thinking of Leach as an outstanding head coach.Â
Grinch may deserve most of the credit, but their former DL coach Jeff Talava'e (Taggart stole him this year) may deserve a lot, too. He's a wicked recruiter by all accounts.
The fall may be near. WSU gets back almost nothing next year.

Leach has a contract that auto-renews a 1 year extension unless either he or the administration gives written notice that that will not continue. That way, he always has a 5 year contract. If WSU finishes a season at around .500, I wouldn't be amazed if there was a lot of talk about pulling the auto-renewal. Problem is, who would want the job that would do better? The AD will have a Hobson's choice. However, as ASU has proven, that doesn't necessarily eliminate plan B. :)

Grinch has for sure done a great job. If he doesn't get what he considers a better offer, it will be interesting to see if he can sustain the situation. I believe that his defense has been to some degree a "gimmick", and that as the PAC-12 North gets used to it, it can be defeated. UW certainly showed how it can be overcome. We should be able to do the same. However, Grinch was using what he had to the best effect possible. If he gets some bigger guys up front, he may be able to be more conventional and even more effective.

I've wondered if one way to beat WSU's system is to go on a silent count, but have the snap triggered by the first sign of shift by the defensive linemen, with your understood "silent kill" run call to the opposite side of the shift.Â
By doing that, you'd have your offensive linemen driving on their blocks while their opposing DLs are in mid-shift, going laterally and in the wrong direction, and utterly vulnerable.Â

Good thoughts. It might be a bit prone to false starts as it requires the snapper to be on the same page with regards to recognizing the shifts. Also, you'd expect WSU to counter by doing fake shifts at some point. But I like your approach.

By the way, Grinch is a great name for a defensive coordinator. Especially at bowl game time, I can just picture the headlines: "Grinch's defense steals Christmas from [insert opponent name]"

Interesting concept. I really like it. Two thoughts:
1) When do you snap the ball if the line doesn't shift? Does the OL and everyone else then key on the center? Does it return to a manual count?
2) I think you would really have a problem with referees. I don't think people in positions of authority do well with unexpected approaches, even if you warn them ahead of time. I remember in high school we had a very basic snapping sequence; e.g., "Down...set...hut...hut" etc. The fastest we would ever go was on "set." We installed a play to go on "Down," the first word out of the quarterback's mouth. We had practiced it a lot, and it got flagged. Why? the ref had never seen it before. We proved by video that no one moved before the snap. Didn't matter. Surprised the other team, and it surprised the refs...ALL OF WHOM WE HAD INFORMED OF THE PLAY BEFORE THE GAME.
