I don't know.
Something like that happened to a friend of mine at an 8th grade summer camp. I went to school in downtown San Jose, and there was a mix of students whose parents worked downtown but lived in suburbs with access to pools, and those students who lived locally with no access to pools.
On the first day we arrived, we all had to swim one length of the pool under the eye of the camp director. Everyone swam the length of the pool, diving from the deep end to the shallow end. Everyone, except for the best athlete (by far) in our school. When it came his turn, he started back by the pool house and ran as fast as he could, leaping into the deep end.
Turns out, he'd never been in a pool before.
After a very long time under water, he came up, red-faced and spluttering, dog-paddling as fast as he could, finally reaching the other side whereupon he hauled himself up and over the edge, coughing up water. Everyone cheered for him, and he got to play in the pool with the rest of us, though he stayed in the shallow end. He became one of Mitty's best athletes, scoring a four year basketball scholarship.
